TV-Series
Description
Spade, alias King, serves as a phantom thief and primary rival to Joker. Orphaned when Professor Clover killed his parents during a yacht trip where they possessed an hourglass artifact, he was found on a snowy road and adopted by a wealthy family. There, he suffered abuse from his foster brother Dump, enduring neglect and mistreatment such as being forced to blow Dump's nose or clean up deliberately broken plates.

A pivotal moment arrived when young Spade encountered Jack (Joker) and Queen attempting to steal the Frozen Sabertooth Tiger Mummy from Dump's family. After mercenaries seeking treasure kidnapped Dump, Spade collaborated with Jack and Queen on a rescue. When Dump betrayed them to the mercenaries, Spade knocked Dump unconscious and escaped with Jack and Queen, declaring his intent to become a phantom thief. This led him to enter the Phantom Thief Academy alongside Jack and Queen, training under Silver Heart. Despite their shared upbringing, Spade and Jack maintained a contentious relationship, often playing pranks on each other, embodying a dynamic of Vitriolic Best Buds.

Spade exhibits confidence, pride, and a generally calm demeanor, though his anime portrayal occasionally amplifies his emotional reactions. He enjoys annoying Joker, employing trickster tactics during heists and using catchphrases like "Adios!" and the anime-exclusive line, "I didn't trick you, I just didn't tell you!" He relishes the spotlight and uses charm to attract female attention. Notably prone to fevers when overly excited, as highlighted by his assistant Dark Eye, he nonetheless demonstrates loyalty, frequently aiding allies in peril, such as collaborating with Joker to rescue people from a burning building.

He operates with Dark Eye as his assistant, secretly the idol Ai from the Shuffle Sisters. Spade knows her dual identity but keeps it confidential. Their dynamic extends beyond a master-servant relationship, though its full depth remains undefined. As a phantom thief, Spade relies on intellect and thorough preparation, researching targets before acting. His arsenal includes a freezing gun – replacing an earlier flower-and-paint pistol in the manga – and playing cards. He declares "Ice Shot!" when using the freezing gun.

In civilian life, Spade writes books under the pen name Spadon King, reflecting his love for literature. His personal preferences include French cuisine and the card game Black Jack. His appearance evolved across the series. Initially, the manga depicted him with long dark blue/purple hair, a yellow mohawk, and elaborate makeup. The anime standardized his design with blue hair, light purple eyes, pink scarves, dark blue pants adorned with black spades, and natural eyelashes. This anime aesthetic later influenced the manga, with creator Hideyasu Takahashi adjusting Spade's design in later volumes.

Spade appears in all four anime seasons, featuring in Season 4 episodes 41, 43, 44, 46, 49, 50, 51, and 52. His role typically involves competing against Joker or reluctantly cooperating during high-stakes scenarios. He participates in multi-thief collaborations, like temporary alliances with Joker and Queen, reinforcing his status as a Worthy Opponent. His development underscores a balance between rivalry and underlying camaraderie, shaped by a traumatic past and a shared ethos of non-violent thievery instilled by Silver Heart.
