Description
Phoenix, also known as Tsubasa Akai, is an alien stranded on Earth for over 10,000 years. His escape pod crashed on an island following a spaceship malfunction caused by water from a souvenir package spilling on the control panel during interstellar travel. This forced him and his companion Acrux (later called Hosshii) to evacuate. The scattered remains of Acrux's food crystallized into ancient treasures across Earth, vital for locating their escape pod. Both were sealed away by a Pharaoh for 3,000 years before being released in the modern era.
In human form, he appears as a youth with scarlet hair featuring gold-orange highlights, magenta eyes, and distinctive cross-shaped pupils. He typically wears a white-and-red hoodie, baggy trousers, and dark green sneakers. His true form manifests large orange wings, bird-like talons, and a white-and-red bird mask. He also wears a coat with bell sleeves and yellow-green shoulder feathers over a black skintight suit adorned with gold markings.
Initially dismissive of humans due to his longevity and negative experiences, he often displays apathy and frequent yawning, earning the nickname "Yawning Jerk." He answers questions by listing three responses and harbors persistent homesickness. Despite his detachment, he demonstrates loyalty to those who aid him, reviving Hachi after a life-threatening injury and healing Chappa's mother following a lost bet. He harbors intense disdain for humans seeking selfish gains, particularly confronting King Aladdin over desires for eternal life. His perception of humanity shifts through interactions with Joker, whose unpredictability and value for human life intrigue him.
His primary goal is locating "Guidance Stones"—jewels imprinted with animal or celestial symbols by Hosshii—to activate the escape pod's homing beacon. This mission brings conflict and occasional collaboration with Joker during global treasure hunts. Key encounters include manipulating a giant squid to retrieve the Star of Thor, competing in the Phantom Thief Grand Prix for the Gaia Bird artifact, and infiltrating a space center for the Red Comet. His inability to swim proves a recurring hindrance due to water causing cellular breakdown.
Abilities include flame manipulation, flight in true form, and mind control over animals, indicated by victims developing cross-pupiled pink eyes. He possesses combat proficiency rivaling Joker even in human form. His blood has regenerative properties capable of curing illnesses and reviving the recently deceased. After Joker rescues him from drowning during captivity by Dr. Neo, he uses this ability to revive Hachi but requires spaceship-based healing due to subsequent weakness. He ultimately departs Earth aboard the restored spacecraft, acknowledging his loss to Joker in their treasure rivalry but promising to return.
Relationships define key aspects: his bond with Hosshii/Acrux as his sole surviving companion from their crash; antagonism toward Joker evolving into mutual respect through shared challenges; and alliances formed through debts or wagers, such as aiding Chappa. His departure concludes with gratitude toward Joker and Hachi for facilitating his return home.
