Description
Mitsuri Kanroji is a central character in the Demon Slayer Corps, holding the title of the Love Hashira. She is a young woman with a slender, graceful build that belies her incredible physical strength, a result of a unique muscle composition eight times denser than that of an average human. Her appearance is distinctive: long pink hair that fades into neon green at the tips, worn in three thick braids, and light green eyes with long lashes. She wears a modified version of the standard Demon Slayer uniform, with a shorter skirt and an open chest area, along with a white haori gifted to her by Kyojuro Rengoku and striped lime-green socks given to her by Obanai Iguro.
Born in the Meiji period, Mitsuri displayed unnatural strength from a very young age, able to carry heavy objects even as a toddler. Her extraordinary appetite, particularly for sakura mochi, contributed to her unusual hair color. This distinct appearance and her superhuman abilities led to social rejection, and at the age of seventeen, a planned marriage fell through because she was seen as a freak. In an attempt to fit in, she dyed her hair black, pretended to be weak, and forced herself to eat normally, but she felt deeply unhappy and inauthentic. Her life changed when she met Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, who told her that her strength was a gift and that she should embrace her true self. Inspired, she joined the Corps, initially motivated by a desire to find a husband stronger than herself, but she soon grew to genuinely dedicate herself to the cause of protecting humanity from demons.
Mitsuri's personality is warm, emotional, and passionate. She constantly compliments others in her thoughts and is known for her kind and caring nature, often cheering up her fellow slayers. She can be easily flustered and somewhat childlike, prone to exaggerated reactions and speaking in rapid, chirping tones. Despite her gentle demeanor, she shows fierce determination and no mercy toward demons, and she is deeply devoted to her comrades. She is also insecure about her abnormal strength and its impact on her relationships, but she learns to accept it as a part of who she is.
Her role in the story is significant as one of the nine Hashira, the highest-ranking swordsmen in the Corps. She participates in major battles, including the Swordsmith Village Arc, where she fights against Upper Rank Four, Hantengu, and his clones. During the Infinity Castle Arc, she is thrust into the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji. Despite being severely wounded early in the fight, she refuses to give up and returns to aid her allies, ultimately sacrificing her life while tearing off one of Muzan's arms. Her bravery and determination are crucial in the final confrontation.
Key relationships shape her journey. She shares a deep, unspoken bond with Obanai Iguro, the Serpent Hashira. They correspond through letters and enjoy meals together, and Obanai has loved her for a long time. In their final moments, they confess their feelings for each other and express hope of reuniting and marrying in another life. Mitsuri also has a strong connection with Kyojuro Rengoku, the former Flame Hashira, who taught her the Flame Breathing style, which she later adapted to create her own Love Breathing. She views him as a cool older brother figure. She is close friends with Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira, often discussing cooking and love troubles. Among the other Hashira, opinions vary: Shinobu and Gyomei Himejima appreciate her cheerfulness and good temper, while Sanemi Shinazugawa finds her foolish demeanor hard to handle.
Mitsuri's notable abilities stem from her unique physique and her mastery of Love Breathing. Her muscle density gives her superhuman strength, endurance, and flexibility, allowing her to bend and twist her body in ways that seem impossible. She wields a custom-made Nichirin blade that is thin and flexible like a whip, making her attacks unpredictable and difficult to block. She has developed several forms of Love Breathing, including First Form: Shivers of First Love, a powerful single slash; Second Form: Agonizing Love of Hesitation, a series of high-speed whip-like strikes; Third Form: Cat-Love Shower, agile leaping attacks; Fifth Form: Fluctuating Love – Chaotic Claws, wide-range slashes using her flexible joints; and Sixth Form: Cat-Step Love Wind, rapid spinning cuts. She also awakens the Demon Slayer Mark, further enhancing her speed, strength, and precision in battle. Her unique constitution, combined with her breathing techniques, makes her one of the fastest and most versatile fighters among the Hashira, though she is not quite as fast as some of her peers. She is also the only known female Demon Slayer to unlock the Demon Slayer Mark.
Throughout her development, Mitsuri transforms from a young woman ashamed of her otherness into a confident and selfless warrior who embraces her strength as a gift. Her journey is one of self-acceptance, love, and sacrifice, leaving a lasting impact on those who fought alongside her.
