Shinichi Kudo, a 17-year-old high school detective renowned for solving baffling cases, was poisoned by the Black Organization with the experimental drug APTX 4869, which shrank him into a child. To conceal his identity and protect others, he assumed the alias Conan Edogawa, blending the names of mystery authors Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo. He now lives with his childhood friend Ran Mouri and her father, private detective Kogoro Mouri. Using their detective agency as a base to investigate the organization, Conan poses as a first-grade student at Teitan Elementary School. Born to mystery novelist Yusaku Kudo and former actress Yukiko Kudo, Shinichi developed formidable deductive skills early, influenced by his father's crime scene visits and extensive mystery novel reading. His ability to solve cases that stumped law enforcement earned him nicknames like "Heisei Holmes" and "Detective of the East." While initially displaying arrogance and enjoying public acclaim before his transformation, his predicament fostered greater humility. His close relationships include Ran, inventor Professor Agasa, fellow detective Heiji Hattori, and Ai Haibara—a former Black Organization scientist who also shrank and now creates temporary antidotes to APTX 4869. Shinichi combines intellectual prowess with emotional depth, demonstrating keen observation and logical reasoning, often likening himself to Sherlock Holmes. Though blunt and sometimes socially insensitive, he deeply values human life, rejecting any justification for murder and believing driving culprits to suicide is equivalent to murder. His romantic feelings for Ran, initially unspoken due to hesitation, were confessed in London during a brief return to his original form. In the TV special "The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa: The Worst Two Days in History," Conan is kidnapped after witnessing suspicious men at a bathhouse. He feigns amnesia from a head injury to infiltrate their plot, uncovering their plan to use him as an unwitting bomber at a festival. Pretending to ingest a sleeping pill, he later advises kidnapper Kondo against fleeing to ensure safety. Conan deduces that the mastermind, Tatsu, faked his death and planted bombs in Kondo's apartment. The situation escalates when Ran rescues Conan and other hostages. Conan alerts police to track Tatsu via a hidden device, leading to Tatsu's arrest and bomb disposal. Beyond deduction, Shinichi possesses diverse skills. An accomplished soccer player scouted professionally in middle school, he uses precision ball-kicking defensively. He handles firearms adeptly due to childhood range training and exhibits acrobatic agility. Academically, he speaks fluent English and understands German and Italian. Despite perfect pitch, he cannot sing on key. He plays violin but struggles with its mechanics. His investigative tools—a voice-changing bowtie, tranquilizer watch, and power-enhancing sneakers—aid his work but require discreet use to maintain his child persona.
