Keita Amano, also known as Kēta or Nate Adams, is an 11-year-old student in Class 5-2 at Springdale Elementary School. While troubled by his average abilities, he maintains an active, cheerful demeanor that endears him to classmates, including his affection for Katie Forester. His life transforms during a forest bug hunt when he discovers a capsule machine beneath a sacred tree, freeing the Yo-kai Whisper. Whisper grants him the Yo-kai Watch, enabling Keita to see, interact with, and befriend Yo-kai while summoning their aid to solve human mysteries. As Keita’s self-appointed butler, Whisper guides him through the Yo-kai world using a Yokai Pad tablet, though his initial dismissals of Yo-kai involvement often prove mistaken. A key companion is Jibanyan, the spirit of a cat named Rudy who died after a truck collision. Jibanyan initially possessed humans to challenge vehicles in vengeance, but bonded deeply with Keita after his bravery was acknowledged. Residing in Keita’s home, Jibanyan later learns his death occurred while saving his former owner Amy, correcting a misunderstanding about her final words. Keita’s Yo-kai Watch evolves technologically; after an incident with the Type Zero model, he gains the ability to switch watch versions by inserting his arm into Whisper’s mouth. As an adult, Keita marries Katie Forester. They have two children: Summer Adams, who nearly drowned as a child and later becomes central to events involving the Yo-kai Watch Arcane and the battle against Demon King Rasen; and Tate Adams, their skeptical younger son who rejects supernatural phenomena despite his father’s history. In manga adaptations, Keita’s possession of the Yo-kai Watch varies: he wields it as the primary protagonist in the shōnen series, but lacks it entirely and remains unaware of Yo-kai in the shōjo series.
