Description
Yang Wen-li was born on April 4, 767 UC to a civilian merchant family. Primarily raised by his father Yang Tai-long after his mother's early death, he spent his childhood aboard his father's interstellar trade ship traveling between Heinessen and Fezzan. At age 16, he pursued historical studies until financial hardship following his father's death and the discovery of fake artwork collections left him penniless. This compelled him to enroll in the Free Planets Alliance Officer Academy, studying war history with waived tuition on condition of military service. The department's dissolution forced his transfer to strategic studies, and he graduated mid-class in 787 UC due to lack of interest rather than ability.

His early military career began as a staff officer under Rear Admiral Arthur Lynch during the Imperial invasion of El Facil in 788 UC. When Alliance forces abandoned the planet, Yang organized the successful evacuation of over three million civilians, earning the title "Hero of El Facil" and a double promotion to Lieutenant Commander. During this event, he first encountered Frederica Greenhill while choking on food, rudely rejecting her offered coffee in favor of tea—an interaction she later recalled after joining his staff. Subsequent assignments included a two-week posting to a prisoner-of-war camp on Econia, where he handled a rebellion and met future key subordinates Fyodor Patrichev and Murai.

Tactical brilliance defined Yang's rise, though superiors frequently dismissed his advice. At the Battle of Legnica (795 UC), Imperial forces under Reinhard von Lohengramm ignited a gas giant's atmosphere after Yang's evacuation warnings went unheeded, forcing Yang and Dusty Attemborough to narrowly escape the firestorm. Shortly after, during the Fourth Battle of Tiamat, he lured Imperial forces away with decoy drones and took Reinhard hostage by positioning his warship beneath the flagship *Brunhild*, enabling the Alliance fleet's retreat.

The Battle of Astarte (796 UC) marked a career turning point. As commodore and strategic advisor, Yang assumed command after Admiral Paetta's injury and saved the remaining Alliance forces by creating a mutual-devouring ring formation against Reinhard's fleet. Despite disproportionate Alliance casualties, this earned him the "Hero of Astarte" title. Subsequently, Alliance politicians assigned him the understrength 13th Fleet—comprising Astarte survivors and recruits—expecting his failure against Iserlohn Fortress. Yang captured Iserlohn by infiltrating with Walter von Schenkopp's Rosen Ritter disguised as Imperial soldiers, seizing the command center while drawing away the fortress fleet.

Yang's command style emphasized historical study, adaptability, and delegation to capable subordinates like von Schenkopp, Attemborough, and Greenhill—whom he later married. His flagship transitioned from *Ulysses* to *Hyperion*. Despite public acclaim as "Miracle Yang" and "Magician," he maintained no political ambitions, openly criticizing Alliance corruption and military adventurism. He valued democracy above all, refusing leadership offers to avoid undermining republican principles, stating military officials should never govern. His personal life reflected simplicity: he preferred tea, neglected household chores, and initially struggled with romance before marrying Greenhill.

Following Iserlohn's capture, Yang became military governor but faced political suspicion. He advocated peace negotiations with Reinhard after the Imperial civil war, opposing the Alliance's disastrous invasion. His ideals centered on preserving democratic institutions despite their flaws, viewing them as preferable to enlightened autocracy. Yang Wen-li was assassinated on June 1, 800 UC, by Earth cultists while serving the El Facil Revolutionary Government.
