Description
Yang Wen-li was born in 767 UC (3567 CE) to a civilian merchant family. Raised primarily by his father Yang Tai-long after his mother's early death, he grew up aboard his father's interstellar freighter traveling between Heinessen and Fezzan. His father's accidental death left the family penniless when their assets were exposed as worthless forgeries, preventing Yang from attending Heinessen Memorial University as planned. He enrolled in the Free Planets Alliance Officer Academy's War History Studies Department to pursue historical studies, accepting waived tuition in exchange for mandatory military service upon graduation. When the department dissolved, he transferred to Strategic Studies, graduating mid-class despite describing himself as perpetually near academic failure.

His military career began as a staff officer to Rear Admiral Arthur Lynch on El Facil in 788 UC (3588 CE). When Imperial forces invaded, Alliance commanders abandoned the planet's civilians. Yang remained, organizing the successful evacuation of over three million people using diversionary tactics. This earned him the title "Hero of El Facil" and a double promotion to Lieutenant Commander. During the evacuation, he first encountered Frederica Greenhill, who assisted him when he was choking; he remarked he preferred tea over the coffee she offered, a comment she later recalled after being assigned to his fleet. Subsequent assignments included managing a prisoner-of-war camp on Econia, where he handled a rebellion and met future key staff members Fyodor Patrichev and Murai. He later served as an operations staff officer in the 8th Fleet, participating in the Fifth and Sixth Battles of Iserlohn.

His tactical acumen emerged during pivotal battles against Imperial forces commanded by Reinhard von Lohengramm. At the Battle of Legnica (795 UC/3595 CE), he recognized the risk of atmospheric ignition but failed to convince his superior to ascend from the gas giant's lower atmosphere, resulting in significant fleet losses. During the Fourth Battle of Tiamat, he volunteered for a diversionary attack on Iserlohn Fortress, using dummy ships to simulate a larger force. When Reinhard detected the ruse, Yang positioned his ship beneath Reinhard's flagship to force a standoff, enabling the Alliance fleet's retreat. The Battle of Astarte (796 UC/3596 CE) marked a turning point: after Alliance fleets were decimated by Reinhard's tactics, Yang assumed command and executed a maneuver that forced the Imperial fleet into a circular formation. Though Alliance losses were ten times higher, the government portrayed it as a victory, dubbing him the "Hero of Astarte".

Promoted to commodore, he received command of the newly formed 13th Fleet—a force of recruits and battle survivors—and was ordered to capture Iserlohn Fortress, a mission intended to remove him politically through expected failure. Utilizing Walter von Schenkopp's Rosen Ritter mercenaries, he infiltrated the fortress by disguising them as Imperial survivors. While his fleet lured away the Imperial defense force, the infiltrators seized control, enabling the 13th Fleet's occupation. This victory earned him the moniker "Miracle Yang".

Politically, Yang was a staunch advocate of democracy who viewed military power as a "bad tool" requiring careful restraint. He decried the Alliance government's corruption and military expansionism, stating, "The nation that neglects social inequality, mischievously increases military budgets... is on the road to extinction". Though he acknowledged benevolent autocracy's efficiency under leaders like Reinhard, he believed democracy's distributed power was safer long-term, noting good rulers were rare. His lack of political ambition and refusal to seize authoritarian power left him vulnerable to government manipulation, including multiple assassination attempts orchestrated by political rivals or groups like the Terraist Church.

Personally, Yang was characterized by unassuming habits and a distinct preference for tea over coffee. He adopted Julian Mintz, a war orphan introduced by colleague Alex Cazerne, though his demanding duties limited their interactions. He maintained friendships with Jessica Edwards and academy classmate Jean Robert Lapp, whose death at Astarte affected him deeply. He later married Frederica Greenhill after she joined his staff. His life ended with assassination by Terraist agents in 800 UC (3600 CE).
