Description
Yang Wen-li was born on April 4, 767 UC to a civilian merchant family. His mother died when he was five, leaving him to be raised primarily by his father, Yang Tai-long, aboard an interstellar trade ship operating between Heinessen and Phezzan. Following his father's death in 783 UC, the family's assets proved worthless counterfeit artwork, leaving Yang penniless. This financial hardship prevented him from attending a civilian university as planned. At age sixteen, he instead enrolled in the Free Planets Alliance Officer Academy, intending to study history in the War History Studies Department. When this department dissolved, he transferred to Strategic Studies, graduating in the middle of his class in 787 UC. His military education required service upon graduation, despite his initial aspirations to become a historian.
Assigned as a staff officer to Rear Admiral Arthur Lynch on El Facil in 788 UC, Yang remained when Imperial forces invaded and the Alliance fleet abandoned the civilian population. He organized the successful evacuation of over three million civilians, earning widespread fame and the title "Hero of El Facil." During this event, he first encountered Frederica Greenhill, who later became his subordinate and eventual wife. Despite promotions, his career stagnated afterward due to resentment from superiors.
Yang participated in critical battles, demonstrating tactical ingenuity. At the Battle of Legnica in 795 UC, he recognized the risk of Reinhard von Lohengramm igniting the gas giant's atmosphere but failed to convince his commander to evacuate in time. He survived by forcing his ship upward as the firestorm destroyed much of the fleet. Shortly after, during the Fourth Battle of Tiamat, he volunteered for a diversionary attack on Iserlohn Fortress using dummy ships. When Reinhard saw through the deception, Yang positioned his destroyer beneath Reinhard's flagship, effectively taking him hostage to allow the Alliance fleet's retreat.
The Battle of Astarte in 796 UC marked a turning point. As second staff officer of the 2nd Fleet, he assumed command after Admiral Paeta was injured. Despite the Alliance suffering ten times Imperial casualties, Yang's tactical retreat preserved significant forces. This was portrayed as a victory, earning him the additional title "Hero of Astarte." Subsequently, he received command of the newly formed, undermanned 13th Fleet and was ordered to capture Iserlohn Fortress—a mission expected to fail. Yang orchestrated a near-bloodless capture by infiltrating the fortress with the Rosen Ritter mercenary group disguised as Imperial soldiers. This success led to further promotions and command of Iserlohn Fortress.
Later, Yang became increasingly entangled in political conflicts, opposing figures like Job Truniht and the Patriotic Knights Corps. After the Alliance government's collapse, he formed the El Facil Revolutionary Government and later the revolutionary预备军 (Preparatory Army). He temporarily retired and married Frederica in 799 UC but was drawn back into conflict. On June 1, 800 UC, he was assassinated by Earth Cult operatives while en route to negotiate with the Empire.
Personality-wise, Yang was a reluctant military leader who despised war, power, and political intrigue. He preferred tea over coffee and maintained a simple lifestyle despite his fame. A staunch democrat, he valued historical knowledge and often quoted historical figures. His leadership style emphasized trust in subordinates' abilities, fostering deep loyalty among his crew. He lacked political acumen, openly criticizing military policies and politicians, which made him enemies within the Alliance.
