Description
Ivan Konev is a supporting character in the Free Planets Alliance military, recognized as one of its most skilled fighter pilots. He serves as a squadron commander under Admiral Yang Wen-li and is a central figure within the Alliance’s elite Spartanian corps.

Konev has a calm, reserved, and rational personality, standing in stark contrast to his close comrade, Olivier Poplin. While Poplin is boisterous, flirtatious, and impulsive, Konev is quiet, gentle, and composed. He often acts as a moderating influence, though their conversations frequently turn into sharp-witted exchanges of sarcasm. Yang Wen-li once observed their dynamic by noting that even harmless chemicals can become harmful when combined, and that Konev and Poplin exemplify this principle. Despite his reserved nature, Konev is not without a dry and cutting sense of humor, which he deploys most effectively against his best friend.

His primary motivation is a sense of duty and a desire for a just conclusion to the long war between the Alliance and the Empire. He is not a flamboyant glory-seeker but a consummate professional who takes his responsibilities seriously. In political discussions, he demonstrates a thoughtful and nuanced perspective. When the Alliance decided to harbor the young boy who was the exiled Emperor Erwin Josef II, Poplin was furious, but Konev supported the decision, arguing that a seven-year-old child should not be blamed for the actions of his predecessors and that the act could lead to a better peace.

Konev’s role in the story is as a key member of the Yang Fleet’s fighter corps. He commands the 2nd Spartanian Squadron and is frequently seen participating in the most dangerous and critical space battles, from the early skirmishes of the war to the major fleet actions around Iserlohn Fortress. He is also tasked with helping to train and mentor Julian Mintz, Yang Wen-li’s young protégé, teaching him air combat tactics alongside Poplin.

His most significant relationship is with Olivier Poplin. Despite their constant bickering, they are inseparable partners and the best of friends, forming the core of the Alliance’s fighter ace roster. Their bond is one of mutual respect born from shared skill and survival. He also has a cousin, Boris Konev, who lives on the neutral planet of Fezzan and later becomes involved with the Alliance. However, the two cousins have never met.

In terms of development, Konev remains a consistent and stable presence throughout the narrative, a reliable ace whose skills are never in doubt. His character arc is not one of personal change but of steadfast dedication, which makes his eventual fate all the more impactful.

Konev is an avid fan of crossword puzzles, a hobby that perfectly suits his thoughtful and introspective personality. He is often seen working on puzzles in quiet moments before or between battles, a habit that provides him with a small, intellectual escape from the chaos of war. His abilities as a pilot are exceptional. He is considered the second-best ace in the Alliance, a claim he once countered by stating that the best pilot is already dead and buried. Alongside Poplin, Warren Hughes, and Sale Aziz Cheekley, he is known as one of the Ace of Clovers, a quartet of legendary fighter pilots.

During the Battle of Vermilion, a massive and decisive engagement between the Yang Fleet and the Imperial forces, Konev is shot down and killed by gunfire from an Imperial cruiser. His death is a significant blow to his comrades. Poplin, upon hearing the news, is visibly shaken, though he masks his grief with a defiant remark that it would take a cruiser to kill a man like Konev, implying it would take ten battleships to capture himself. Konev’s final rank is that of Major. He was born on December 25, 771 SE, and dies in battle at the age of 27.
