Description
Ivan Konev served as a fighter pilot and commander in the Free Planets Alliance military, primarily under Admiral Yang Wen-li. Beginning his career in the Alliance 2nd Fleet, he achieved the rank of flying officer by September 795 UC and fought in the Fourth Battle of Tiamat, forging a close professional bond with fellow pilot Olivier Poplin.

Continuing with the 2nd Fleet into 796 UC, Konev participated in the Battle of Astarte. Initially viewing the situation as hopeless, he contributed to the fleet's successful retreat orchestrated by Yang Wen-li. He then transferred to the newly formed 13th Fleet, receiving a promotion to flight lieutenant. In October 796 UC, his Spartanian sustained port hull damage during the Battle of Amritsar Starzone, though he survived.

When Yang Wen-li assumed command of Iserlohn Fortress later that year, Konev was assigned commander of the fleet's 2nd Spartanian Squadron, with Poplin leading the 1st Squadron, coinciding with his promotion to squadron leader. He fought in most major Yang Fleet engagements, including the Battle of Doria Starzone in July 797 UC and a skirmish against the Imperial Eihendorf Fleet in early 798 UC, where he shot down at least 23 enemy fighters.

His combat record included the Eighth Battle of Iserlohn in April 798 UC, where his and Poplin's squadrons helped secure a decisive victory against the Imperial Geiersburg Fortress. In January 799 UC, he fought during the Ninth Battle of Iserlohn against Oskar von Reuenthal's forces, successfully defending Alliance personnel before Yang abandoned the fortress.

Returning to Heinessen with the Yang Fleet, Konev attained the rank of wing commander. He accompanied the fleet to the Vermilion Starzone in early 799 UC and was killed in action during the Battle of Vermilion when Imperial cruiser fire struck his Spartanian. Flight Lieutenant Caldwell succeeded him as 2nd Squadron commander.

Konev maintained a close friendship with Olivier Poplin throughout his career, their personalities contrasting: Poplin was brash and excitable, while Konev typically displayed calm rationality, though he occasionally matched Poplin's sarcasm. Poplin was visibly distraught after Konev's death. Beyond military duties, Konev participated in Iserlohn leadership discussions, showed particular fondness for Julian Mintz, and had a cousin on Fezzan he had never met.

His interests included crossword puzzles, which he frequently worked on before and between battles. His final conversation with Poplin involved a crossword clue seeking a seven-letter word for "Something that everybody experiences once," with the answer "FUNERAL." Politically, Konev supported the FPA's protection of Erwin Josef II, arguing the young emperor shouldn't bear ancestral responsibility, hoping it would foster peace. His nuanced political arguments led Poplin to compare them to Paul von Oberstein's.

Regarding organizational matters, Konev participated in discussions about promotion limitations within the Yang Fleet, recognizing that Yang's exceptional status hindered standard advancement opportunities for personnel like himself, reflecting his pragmatic approach to military bureaucracy.
