Description
Dusty Attenborough is a notable officer in the Free Planets Alliance fleet and a close, long-standing friend of the famed tactician Yang Wen-li. Born on the planet Heinessen in 769 UC, Dusty initially had no desire to pursue a military career, instead hoping to follow his father into journalism. This path changed due to a family promise made by his father to his maternal grandfather, a soldier who died in battle shortly before Dusty was born. His mother, believing Dusty to be the reincarnation of her fallen father, gave him the man's name. After an emotional appeal from his father, who knelt and begged him to fulfill the vow, Dusty reluctantly agreed to a compromise: he would apply to both a university and the military academy. When only the military academy accepted him, his course was set.
At the academy, Dusty's mischievous nature surfaced early. During his first year, he was caught breaking curfew by a third-year student named Yang Wen-li. Instead of reporting him, Yang let him off the hook, an act of kindness that forged a lasting bond between the two. They would go on to share many late nights and form the "Harmful Sea Books Association," a club they created primarily for socializing. Despite this rocky start and a continued rebellious streak, Dusty proved to be an exceptional student and a gifted military mind, leading to a remarkably rapid ascent through the ranks. He eventually became the youngest admiral in the history of the Free Planets Alliance.
Dusty is perhaps best known for his cheerful, good-natured, and often playful personality. He frequently teases his comrades, such as the ace pilot Oliver Poplin and the skilled soldier Walter von Schönkopf, about their romantic lives, all the while reportedly having little to no experience in that area himself. This lighthearted demeanor belies a sharp tactical intellect and a cool head in battle. He and Poplin famously coined the phrase that their revolutionary war was fought out of "foppery and whim," capturing the ironic and somewhat irreverent spirit that often characterized the forces under Yang's command. Dusty carries with him a rusted key, a lucky charm given to him by his father, which was said to have deflected a bullet that struck his grandfather, a story he privately doubts.
In his role within the story, Dusty Attenborough is one of Yang Wen-li's most trusted subordinates and a key figure in the 13th Fleet, first serving as a staff advisor. He fought alongside Yang in numerous major engagements, including the Battle of Legnica and the Fourth Battle of Tiamat, where he was one of only a handful of officers to volunteer for Yang's dangerous diversionary tactic that allowed the Alliance fleet to retreat. He also played a critical part in the Seventh Battle of Iserlohn, which led to the fortress's capture. He commands from powerful warships, including the Triglav and later the Masasoite. His tactical acumen is showcased in Die Neue These Second, when he devises a plan using damaged ships attached to massive rocks to push back the enemy fleet and save the remnants of the Alliance forces from annihilation during their disastrous invasion of Imperial territory.
As the series progresses, Dusty continues to mature as a commander. Following the alliance's defeat and subsequent political subjugation by the Galactic Empire, he retires alongside Yang but quickly rejoins him to fight for the newly established Iserlohn Republic. After Yang Wen-li's eventual death, Dusty demonstrates his loyalty and judgment by supporting Julian Mintz as the next commander of the revolutionary army, choosing to remain a key subordinate rather than seizing leadership for himself. His abilities lie not just in personal combat or fleet maneuvering, but in his reliability as a dynamic and independent commander who can execute complex strategies, his capacity to inspire his crews even when facing overwhelming odds, and his irreplaceable role as a confidant and source of levity for the brilliant but often somber Yang Wen-li.
