Description
Yūsuke Yotsuya is a 14-year-old male student who transferred from rural Japan to Tokyo. He stands 171 cm tall with black hair and brown eyes, wearing a standard Japanese school uniform of white shirt, black pants, and white shoes. In an alternate world, his attire shifts to a practical farmer’s outfit: a loose blue shirt fastened by a black belt, shaded white pants, brown boots, and often black sweatbands.
After moving to Tokyo, he faced significant social isolation. Once outgoing in his rural hometown, he became withdrawn and cynical due to subtle bullying and exclusion at his new school. This included deliberate isolation and witnessing the destruction of a childhood tree and buried object, fostering deep resentment toward Tokyo. He retreated into video games and adopted a cold, pragmatic worldview.
Yūsuke presents as an anti-social loner who claims to hate humanity. He operates with ruthless logic, prioritizing mission objectives over emotions and ranking individuals by survival utility. He willingly sacrifices others or himself if necessary, exemplified by choosing a quest over saving a teammate. Yet he respects exceptional diligence or resilience, like Iu Shindo or Kusue Hakozaki. His moral ambiguity includes destroying bullies' phones, endorsing gender-blind violence, and psychologically tormenting enemies to mirror their cruelty. Killing a human for the first time traumatized him, revealing conflict between his nihilism and latent empathy.
Through alternate-world journeys, he sequentially acquires classes and abilities:
- **Farmer Rank 10**: Wields farming tools; identifies edible plants and applies agricultural techniques.
- **Chef Rank 10**: Recognizes weaknesses of beasts/monsters below rank B; uses indestructible kitchen knives as weapons.
- **Wizard (Creature) Rank 10**: Manipulates cellular metabolism via touch to heal or decay; enhances/reduces persuasiveness of speech and actions.
- **Blacksmith Rank 10**: Crafts leather and iron equipment, including hammers and chisels.
- **Wizard (Heat) Rank 10**: Controls heat-based magic.
- **Thief Rank 10**: Wields dual daggers.
- **Hunter Rank 10**: Obtained during mimic combat.
- **Sorcerer (Creature) Rank 7**: Replicates Wizard (Creature) abilities with advanced applications like presence concealment.
His development involves escalating trauma and ethical reckoning. Early missions reinforce his utilitarian approach, using non-combat classes inventively—like trapping foes with a hoe or exploiting monster vitals via cooking skills. Bonds with NPCs like Kahabell, who falls for him, and Aoyu, who confesses feelings, challenge his detachment. Learning the "game world" is a parallel reality with permanent deaths forces him to confront his actions. A pivotal breakdown occurs after realizing he killed real humans, shattering his detachment and amplifying guilt.
He is later revealed as the 44th descendant of warrior Hanma Yujiro and entity Featherine. This fuels his resolve to grow stronger independently, rejecting reliance on others despite Shindo’s emphasis on friendship. Relationships with female party members—including admired Shindo and Tokitate and Hakozaki—remain platonic but emotionally significant, highlighting his clumsy sincerity and unintentional endearment.
