Description
Nagato is the personification of the Japanese battleship Nagato, the lead ship of the Nagato class. She was the first vessel built under the Eight-Eight Fleet plan and served as the flagship of the Combined Fleet until the Yamato class entered service. Her historical counterpart was one of the world's seven major battleships, known as the Big Seven, and was the only Japanese capital ship to survive the Second World War before being used as a target in the Operation Crossroads nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll.
In the KanColle universe, Nagato is depicted as a tall, dignified woman with long black hair and red eyes. She carries herself with a calm, collected, and serious demeanor, often projecting an intimidating air. As the Admiral's secretary ship, she is responsible for maintaining discipline and ensuring that other ship girls follow naval regulations. She takes her duties very seriously and speaks in a formal, commanding tone.
Despite her stern exterior, Nagato has a softer side that she rarely shows openly. She has a fondness for cute things, particularly the smaller destroyer girls, and can become flustered or awkward when confronted with such things. This contrast between her warrior-like persona and her hidden gentleness is a defining trait. She is also somewhat clumsy in informal situations, such as when she attempts to brew tea or handle personal matters.
Nagato's motivations are rooted in a strong sense of duty and pride. She strives to live up to the legacy of the Big Seven and to protect the fleet entrusted to her. Her role in the story is primarily that of a senior officer and a reliable commander. In the anime, she acts as the Admiral's right hand, issuing orders and leading major operations. She is a stabilizing presence in the face of danger and maintains a strict adherence to protocol, though she is also capable of showing warmth to those under her command.
Her closest relationship is with her sister ship Mutsu, who accompanies her constantly. The two share a deep bond of trust and frequently work together. Nagato also has a respectful but somewhat competitive relationship with Yamato, acknowledging Yamato's superior firepower while taking pride in her own historical role as flagship. She is notably fond of the Sixth Destroyer Division and other young destroyers, often doting on them in private.
Nagato undergoes development through remodeling. At level 88, she can be remodeled into Nagato Kai Ni, which requires a significant amount of resources and a blueprint. This upgrade greatly enhances her combat capabilities and grants her a special attack called the Nagato-class Special Attack, a powerful salvo that can be performed alongside Mutsu. This ability reflects her historical role as a flagship and her place among the most powerful battleships of her era.
In combat, Nagato excels in firepower and armor, making her one of the strongest battleships available from normal construction and drops. She can equip 41 cm main guns and, after remodeling, can use prototype 51 cm cannons, giving her tremendous offensive potential. She also possesses high luck, which makes her effective in night battles. Her resource consumption is heavy, reflecting her size and power. Overall, Nagato is a central figure in the KanColle setting, embodying the pride, strength, and hidden warmth of a legendary warship.
