Description
Sunao Sumeragi, sole heir to the Sumeragi Dojo and its undefeatable sword style, trained rigorously from childhood alongside her elder brother Suou, developing exceptional skills and deep admiration for him. Suou's death fighting an irregularly powerful Amasogi led her to blame his Tsugumomo partner, the katana Kotetsu, for perceived weakness. Driven by vengeance, she demanded the God of the Land Honoka grant her a powerful Tsugumomo, but was refused due to insufficient skill. Defiantly taking Kotetsu, she pursued the Amasogi only to find it slain by Kanaka Kagami. This prompted Sunao to declare Kanaka her nemesis, challenging her repeatedly without success. Seeking greater strength, she trained at Tsuzura Temple before returning to Komiya. There, she officially became the regional exorcist by passing Honoka's test: blocking the "Flame of the Heavens" with her ultimate technique, "Hibakiri."

She sports short red hair, red eyes, and typically maintains a serious expression. Her attire is simplistic, often school uniforms or sleeveless shirts paired with jeans or shorts. Initially hot-blooded and impulsive, Sunao acts on instinct and underestimates opponents. She is outspoken, honest to the point of rudeness, and highly prideful, frequently lecturing others to assert superiority. She harbored a negative view of Tsugumomo, treating Kotetsu solely as a tool. The traumatic loss of Suou instilled a deep-seated fear of powerlessness, fueling her obsession with strength to protect loved ones. She shows extreme respect towards higher authorities like Gods of the Land but harbors intense fear of her mother, Suzuri, obeying commands to evade harsh punishments.

A pivotal duel loss to Kazuya Kagami, Kamioka's new Exorcist, triggered her development. This defeat forced a Heel Realization: acknowledging her dishonorable conduct toward Kotetsu, whose hilt broke during the duel after she ignored his warnings about overexertion. Combined with her mother's reprimand, this compelled her to reevaluate her relationship with Kotetsu, vowing to treat him with respect and kindness. Concurrently, she developed romantic feelings for Kazuya, noting his resemblance to Suou, though she struggles to express these emotions. To appease Suzuri after the duel, Sunao falsely claimed an engagement to Kazuya. This led to forced marriage attempts and a consummation counterfeit scheme involving smeared blood on bedsheets – a deception her mother quickly uncovered, resulting in punishment. These events tempered her arrogance, making her more prone to comedic or humiliating situations while reinforcing her loyalty and sense of honor.

Her combat abilities center on expert swordsmanship and refined spirit power control. As Kotetsu's wielder, she utilizes his energy storage to generate shockwaves and accelerated strikes. Key techniques include "Ground Slash," sending shockwaves through terrain; "Air Slash" for ranged attacks with adjustable power and range; "Double Claw" for consecutive slashes; and "Shadow Sword," a concealed spiritual blade enabling unpredictable assaults. Her ultimate technique, "Hibakiri," exploits Kotetsu's speed enhancement to unleash dozens of slashes instantaneously for massive impact. Her improved partnership with Kotetsu following her defeat significantly amplified her combat effectiveness.
