Description
Waltrud Krupinski is a veteran ace witch from Karlsland serving in the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing with the rank of Flying Officer. Her peers know her by the nicknames Countess, Countess Graf Punski, and Earl.
Born in Domnau in northeast Karlsland, she grew up in the Baltic Sea port city of Braunsberg as the child of public officials. Her magical abilities led her to consider a military career from a young age. She initially aspired to join the Navy to travel, but an inspection revealed her suitability as an aviation witch, prompting her enrollment in an Air Force training school. There, she was known for reckless behavior like sneaking out at night, yet she maintained excellent academic performance and graduated as a Second Lieutenant.
She was assigned to JG52 around the same time as Gertrud Barkhorn and Erica Hartmann, whom she considers close friends. Waltrud served as Erica Hartmann's lead wingman for a significant period. The Hispanian campaign had ended by the time of her assignment, limiting initial combat opportunities. She received training from a senior sergeant with experience from Hispania, gaining substantial flight experience before Neuroi attacks began. During the Ostmark defensive battle, she achieved numerous takedowns but also destroyed many Striker Units due to her aggressive combat style. This tendency to damage equipment became a logistical issue on the eastern front, often resulting in her being sent back to retrieve new units.
A famous anecdote describes her making an emergency landing with a flaming Striker Unit in front of startled onlookers, including the newly transferred Erica Hartmann and Marseille, whom she greeted nonchalantly. She participated in Operation Bifrost, where she was awarded the Knight's Cross, promoted to Flying Officer, and became company commander of JG52's 7th Company. Her unit handled defense and support duties in eastern Karlsland until civilian evacuations were complete, after which they moved to Suomus. She later took part in Operation Barbarossa, achieving significant results and becoming the unit's second-highest ace after Squadron Leader Rall in terms of confirmed kills.
She is a tall, slender individual standing 1.75 meters tall with short, boyish dirty blonde hair and olive eyes. Her personality is easygoing, optimistic, and hedonistic. She is a known womanizer and hard drinker, often flirting with witches she finds attractive and referring to them as her "little kittens." Despite her elegant demeanor, she is brave and energetic in combat with a tendency to prioritize attack positioning over personal safety, leading to frequent Striker Unit damage and emergency landings. This recklessness is balanced by her dauntless dogfighting skills and marksmanship.
Her inherent magic is called Magic Boost, which involves releasing all her magical power at once for super acceleration. This ability places a heavy burden on her Striker Unit and is rarely used. When activating her magic, she develops the ears and tail of a Weimaraner dog breed. Her standard Striker Unit is modeled after the Messerschmitt Bf109G-2 and G-6 variants, often designated with a yellow number 5. Her weapons include the MG 42 and Sturmgewehr 44.
She is openly homosexual and canonically a womanizer, one of the few characters in the franchise explicitly portrayed as such. Series events, artwork, and creator tweets heavily imply she is in a relationship with Edytha Rossmann. This was notably addressed when Vesna Mikovič, who had romantic feelings for her, confronted her about her affections, and Waltrud chose Edytha.
Within the 502nd, she forms a well-known trio with Nikka Edvardine Katajainen and Naoe Kanno, leading to the unit's nickname "The Break Witches." She acts as a protector for the two younger witches, who have difficulties with authority figures. She also had an audience with the Emperor of Karlsland alongside Barkhorn, Hartmann, and Johanna Wiese.
Her character is based on the historical Prussian-born German ace Walter Krupinski, who was nicknamed Graf Pinski due to his Prussian origins and was credited with 197 victories in 1,100 sorties during World War II.
