OVA
Description
Naoe Kanno, frequently addressed as Nao, hails from Fuso and served in the Fuso Imperial Navy prior to her assignment to the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing. Born to strict parents, her childhood demeanor was obedient, marked by a strong affinity for literature, especially Gallian works. She meticulously maintained diaries filled with Tanka poetry and specialized in the Gallian language during her naval academy studies. She abstains from alcohol consumption.

Training proved harsh, with instructors and peers frequently targeting her for bullying. Her distinctive combat approach involves closing to extreme proximity with targets, a tactic that often resulted in collisions and damaged Striker Units, earning her the nickname "Destroyer." This method also fostered expertise in close-range evasion. After promotion to Pilot Officer, she deployed with the European Dispatch Fleet for Operation Barbarossa, providing inland support during the Petersburg Invasion Operation and subsequent defense duties. Official transfer records indicate reassignments to the 201st and 343rd Flying Corps on paper before joining the newly established 502nd Joint Fighter Wing amid rising international witch exchanges.

Her personality exhibits a Napoleonic complex, combining a small stature with audacious aerial tactics and socially brash behavior. She consciously adopted this ferocious persona after awakening her magical abilities, reinforcing it with a self-directed mantra to combat Neuroi. This aggressive attitude initially hindered teamwork, though exposure to Flight Lieutenant Pokryshkin moderated it, influenced by Pokryshkin's resemblance to a cherished elder sister figure from her past. Her combat philosophy emphasizes relentless engagement: resorting to blades when ammunition depletes and bodily impacts if blades break. She prioritizes large targets, believing their defeat yields greater worth, and excels in dive-and-fire maneuvers executed at near-contact distances.

Initially, she rejected Hikari Karibuchi's membership in the 502nd, perceiving her as inadequate compared to Takami. However, she gradually accepted Hikari after witnessing her combat intelligence and determination; their relationship evolved into a close partnership. A visible scar on her left cheek remains concealed beneath a patch. Her familiar manifests as a bulldog, referencing both the historical ace Kanno Naoshi's nickname and her own destructive reputation.

Her magical abilities center on the Compression-formula Super Hardness Defensive Magic Circle, generating shields compressed to mere centimeters for maximum durability. She adapts this shield to her fist for the Tsurugi Issen punching technique. Her Striker Units included the Miyabishi Type 0 Carrier-based Fighter Legs Model 22 Kou, which typically lacked markings due to frequent destruction and received hasty winter camouflage. Following promotion to Flying Officer, she operated the Yamanishi Shiden Model 21, displaying victory markings for two large and five small Neuroi with reduced destruction rates.

In the spin-off *World Witches: Take Off!*, anticipation for Takami's return triggers visible excitement and self-embarrassment during preparations with the 502nd, contrasting her typically combative demeanor. The OVA *Brave Witches: Petersburg Daisenryaku* focuses minimally on her, instead centering on other characters' interactions during New Year festivities.
