Description
Hikari Karibuchi, a witch from Sasebo, Fuso, pursues her sister Takami’s legacy by enrolling in the Sasebo navy military school. After volunteering for a Suomus logistics mission, a Neuroi attack critically injures Takami, prompting Gundula Rall to disguise Hikari as her sister for integration into the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing. Assuming Takami’s identity, Hikari inherits the experimental Shiden Model-4 Striker Unit "Chidori" and a Type 99 13mm machine gun.
Driven by determination and optimism, Hikari combats self-doubt while striving to escape her sister’s shadow. Her impulsiveness leads to overexertion, and initial magical shortcomings manifest in clumsiness with her Striker Unit. Persistent training—scaling obelisks, refining flight stability—gradually hones her skills. Though stubbornness spurs reckless choices, it fuels creative combat tactics and rallying allies against overwhelming odds.
Hikari’s "Contact Eye" (接触魔眼) allows Neuroi core detection via physical touch, visualized as X-ray-like imagery. The high-risk ability demands close proximity, restricting its use. Despite superior physical stamina, early magical limitations impede basic functions like water-walking, necessitating rigorous practice to master her Striker Unit.
Media portrayals chronicle her growth: In *The Great Petersburg Strategy* OVA, Eila Ilmatar Juutilainen stabilizes her flight during a Neuroi battle, emphasizing teamwork. *World Witches: Take Off!* juxtaposes her unifying role in ice swimming and supply runs with comedic misadventures, including near-arrests for underage alcohol procurement. Takami’s eventual return to the 502nd marks Hikari’s symbolic step into independence.
Collaboration defines her relationships. Partner Naoe Kanno shares joint missions and training, reflecting Hikari’s loyalty. Evolving dynamics within the 502nd transition from insecurity to mutual respect, solidified through shared victories against Neuroi forces. These trials cement her identity as a witch forging her own path while honoring her sister’s legacy.
