Description
Daisuke Higashida, a 15-year-old Higashizaka High School freshman standing 172 cm tall with black hair and yellow-hazel eyes, lives with his father Kousaku, mother Sachiko, and younger sister Sakiko. Forced into a part-time job at Wagnaria family restaurant due to his father's bankruptcy and the family's carefree attitude toward their financial crisis, Daisuke covers his personal expenses—school commuting costs and phone bills—to avoid a grueling 15-kilometer bicycle commute.

Initially reluctant about work for fear of impacting his studies, Daisuke possesses a serious, easily annoyed personality starkly contrasting his family's lightheartedness. He frequently deploys deadpan snark and brutal honesty, especially toward irritating coworkers, establishing him as Wagnaria's primary "straight man" reacting to eccentric staff. A recurring gag involves him surviving Hana Miyakoshi's homemade chocolates, experiences so toxic they induce near-death meetings with "St. Valentine."

His relationships evolve significantly. He initially finds senior waitress Hana Miyakoshi intimidating and abrasive, clashing over her academic struggles and lethal cooking, yet acknowledges her physical attractiveness when silent. Employing twisted logic that refusal would prolong her pestering, he agrees to date Hana under the false pretense of improving her culinary skills. This arrangement gradually fosters genuine romantic feelings, culminating in mutual authenticity and Daisuke's first radiant smile upon recognizing parallels between Hana's family and his own dysfunction.

Among coworkers, Daisuke maintains a casual friendship with Sayuri Muranushi, seeking her advice despite unease about her perception of supernatural entities. He consistently sympathizes with Yuuta Shindou's financial hardships and mistreatment by Shiho Kamakura, whom he considers an equal. He openly criticizes manager Kenichirou Sakaki as incompetent and undeserving of his position, advocating for him to perform regular duties.

Academically proficient, Daisuke attends the same school as Souta Takanashi (though they rarely interact) and hides his job due to school prohibitions. Demonstrating social perceptiveness, he accurately discerns others' thoughts and impresses coworker Kisaki Kondou by answering complex history questions. Outside Wagnaria, he persistently urges chronically absent classmate Miri Yanagiba to attend school, recognizing her isolation despite claiming to dislike her. He remains oblivious to classmate Rui Nagata's longstanding romantic feelings, considering her a friend and enlisting her help to befriend Miri.

Daisuke's character development reveals gradual emotional opening, attributed partly to consuming Hana's chocolates and evolving relationships. He exhibits increased aggression since starting work, coexisting with underlying kindness like protecting others' futures despite his harsh exterior. Personal details include his preference for peaceful days, store-bought chocolate, and the colors black and blue.
