Description
Baikinman, whose name translates to "Germ Man," is the primary antagonist of the long-running series. His origin is tied directly to his heroic counterpart; he arrived on Earth as an egg from the distant Baikin Planet and hatched at the exact moment of Anpanman's birth, a coincidence that defines his entire existence. His physical design is an anthropomorphic and deliberately grotesque representation of a germ or fly. He has a black, furry body, large, prominent teeth, pink eyes, purple lips, a purple nose, two antennae, buzzing fly-like wings, a zigzag-shaped tail, and a notably long, slimy blue tongue. While he initially appeared to be wearing a black villain's suit, it has since been established that his black coloring is actually a protective outer coat of mold and mildew; if he is ever fully washed with soap or sanitized, his true body is revealed to be bone-white underneath.
Baikinman's personality is defined by a grandiose and impulsive narcissism. He is loud, rude, and possesses an obsessive, unhealthy drive to defeat Anpanman, viewing this mission as his sole reason for being. His ego is reflected in his surroundings; he lives in a castle built in the shape of his own head and exclusively uses the pompous Japanese pronoun ore-sama, which conveys an over-the-top sense of self-importance. Despite proclaiming himself to be "a being who knows no love," he occasionally reveals a softer, more vulnerable side. The series creator, Takashi Yanase, has stated that deep down, Baikinman secretly wishes he could live a normal life but feels trapped by the villainous role he was born to play. He is also a notorious glutton, and when he is not actively plotting against his nemesis, he is often trying to steal food from others.
In the narrative, Baikinman serves as the agent of chaos, constantly scheming to spread germs, steal food, and ruin the peaceful harmony of the world. His primary motivation is the defeat and destruction of Anpanman, but he is also perfectly content to engage in smaller acts of mischief, bullying, and thievery. A key aspect of his character is his incredible resilience; no matter how many times he is defeated and sent flying by Anpanman's An-Punch, he never gives up and always returns to hatch a new plot. His role is so central to the series that he is never completely absent from a story, and many plots are told from his perspective.
His key relationships are complex and central to the series' dynamic. His primary enemy is, of course, Anpanman, though rare moments exist where he hesitates or even cooperates with his foe, such as in a 2018 film where he helped save Anpanman's life. His closest ally is Dokin-chan, his female partner in crime. He harbors unrequited romantic feelings for her and constantly strives to please her, even though she is selfish, bosses him around, and is madly in love with the handsome Shokupanman. He is also a self-proclaimed genius inventor, and one of his most notable abilities is his talent for improvisational engineering. He can quickly construct elaborate and often ridiculous robots, mecha, UFOs, and other gadgets to carry out his schemes. Other key creations include Franken Robo Kun, a gentle robot too kind to fight, for whom Baikinman has a hidden soft spot. Baikinman possesses a few notable abilities and a critical weakness. He can use his insect-like wings for flight, though he more commonly relies on his Baikin UFO. His long, extendable tongue is often used to lick victims or steal food. His most significant vulnerability is cleanliness; exposure to soap or any form of sanitization causes him immense pain and physically shrinks him to the size of an insect. Over the course of the series, his portrayal has seen some development. While remaining a villain, later episodes have occasionally shown him engaging in more moderate hygiene habits, like washing his hands, likely to set a better example for young viewers. His enduring popularity has cemented him as a iconic character, with his design even influencing other personifications of germs and viruses in Japanese media.
