Description
Nyarth, known as Meowth in English-language media, plays a significant role within the film's narrative. As a member of Team Rocket alongside Jessie and James, he joins their initial alliance with Councillor Alva of the Azoth Kingdom. Alva hires the trio to assist in recapturing the artificial Pokémon Magearna, an arrangement exploiting Team Rocket's ongoing goal to capture Ash Ketchum's Pikachu while aligning with Alva's scheme.
Meowth's unique ability to understand and translate Pokémon speech becomes central to the plot. After Alva forcibly removes Magearna's Soul-Heart to power a destructive weapon, he captures Meowth. Alva exploits Meowth's translating skills to monitor Magearna's consciousness trapped within the Soul-Heart. During this captivity, Meowth suffers torture and is forced to relay Magearna's agonized screams as Alva uses the Soul-Heart to fire the weapon. This experience causes Meowth significant emotional distress, leading him to weep uncontrollably upon hearing Magearna's suffering and its subsequent silencing after repeated weapon activations.
This cruelty marks a turning point for Team Rocket. Witnessing Alva's callous disregard for Magearna's life and Meowth's torment, Jessie and James abandon their alliance. Their priorities shift to rescuing Meowth and opposing Alva's plans, a rare instance where Team Rocket actively works against a greater evil despite their usual antagonistic role. Meowth's suffering directly motivates their defiance.
Meowth's background informs his perspective: he is a self-taught speaker of human language, having acquired it during a difficult life as an abandoned street Pokémon in an urban environment. His past experiences of abandonment and mistreatment contribute to his understanding of and empathy for other abused Pokémon, including those residing in the Nebel Plateau sanctuary central to the film's conflict. This history is reflected in his visceral reaction to Alva's actions and Magearna's plight.
Following the climax where Ash and Volcanion thwart Alva and restore Magearna, Team Rocket observes the peaceful resolution from a distance. They depart without further confrontation, satisfied with the outcome and Meowth's safety.
