Description
Sella is an Einzbern homunculus crafted through alchemy, initially designated for disposal as a failure in the Holy Grail project but reassigned as Illyasviel von Einzbern's maid and magic instructor. Despite her youthful look, she is roughly two years old during the Fifth Holy Grail War. She possesses long pale hair and crimson eyes, usually dressed in a hooded maid uniform matching her counterpart Leysritt, though she sometimes wears casual clothes.
Her personality merges strict professionalism with profound loyalty to Illya. She guards Illya with fierce protectiveness, often distrusting outsiders like Shirou Emiya, and places Illya's safety and upbringing above everything. Beneath her stern exterior lies insecurity about her body and emotional vulnerability, making her a frequent target for Illya and Leysritt's teasing. She expresses emotions openly, showing displeasure or concern readily, and harbors a distinct fondness for nature, preferring to tend the castle gardens and interact with plants and animals over engaging with people.
In *Fate/stay night*, particularly the *Unlimited Blade Works* route, Sella accompanies Illya to Fuyuki City alongside Leysritt. Her duties include managing the Einzbern castle courtyard, where she cultivates a flower bed symbolizing hope for Illya. She opposes alliances with Shirou and Rin Tohsaka, insisting on formal decorum for Illya's status as the Einzbern heir. When Gilgamesh assaults the castle, Sella confronts him to shield Illya and is impaled and decapitated after refusing to yield.
Outside *Fate/stay night*, Sella appears in *Carnival Phantasm*'s fifth episode, "Berserker's First Errand," retrieving Leysritt after she secretly follows Berserker. This portrayal maintains her dutiful nature within comedic scenarios atypical of the main series.
In spin-offs, her role varies:
- *Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya* depicts her as a guardian for Illya and Shirou during their parents' absence.
- *Capsule Servant* features her assisting Celebloomers, displaying concern for Celebloomers' wellbeing during Fuyuki events.
- *Fate/strange Fake* (manga) includes her arguing with Philia, an event later recalled by Ayaka Sajyou.
Sella possesses superior magic circuits ideal for teaching magecraft but lacks combat aptitude due to her fragile homunculus body. Her abilities include masking her presence from non-magi and holding a certified driver's license.
