Description
Rin Tohsaka acts as the magus supervisor for Illyasviel von Einzbern in the Fate/kaleid liner universe. Her history diverges sharply from other timelines: neither she nor her family joined the Holy Grail War or knew of the Einzberns or the ritual. Despite this divergence, her sister Sakura was still given to the Matou family. Rin developed feelings for Shirou Emiya after observing his relentless attempts at an impossible high jump, expressing these feelings more openly than her counterparts. Recognized for her talents, she secured early admission to the Mage's Association immediately after middle school, becoming a direct apprentice to Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg. He assigned Rin and Luviagelita Edelfelt (Luvia) the mission to retrieve scattered Class Cards in Fuyuki City, equipping them with Kaleidosticks—Magical Ruby for Rin.
Her role spans multiple story arcs. Initially arriving in Fuyuki with Luvia, their fierce rivalry causes their Kaleidosticks to cancel contracts and abandon them. After Magical Ruby contracts Illya, Rin compels Illya to gather Class Cards under her supervision. Rin later cooperates with Illya, Luvia, and Miyu Edelfelt to secure most of the seven Class Cards. Following the Berserker Card retrieval, Lord El-Melloi II informs them Zelretch will accept them as pupils only after a year in Japan learning "common sense," cooperation, and harmony. Financial pressure from purchasing magical jewels forces Rin to work as a maid in Luvia's mansion during 2wei! events. She aids against the eighth Class Card (Archer-class Gilgamesh) and subsequent hostile figures who kidnap Miyu, transporting Rin and others to a parallel world.
In 3rei!!, Rin and Luvia are captured by the Ainsworth family, subjected to brainwashing, and transformed into servants. Freed from mental control by Gilgamesh and Bazett, they rejoin Illya's group. During a critical battle, Rin catches an alternate, severely injured Shirou Emiya after attacks by Sakura and Beatrice Flowerchild. She remains beside him, attempting futile healing until Bazett returns her lost pendant, enabling her to fully restore him using its stored energy. Rin later deduces the Ainsworths' objectives extend beyond proclaimed world salvation, suspecting hidden magi motives. In the climax against Darius Ainsworth, she and Luvia intervene to protect Shirou from Sakura, with Rin emotionally appealing to Sakura as her "older sister." After Sakura dismisses her—stating her own Rin died five years prior—Rin expresses relief they could have lived as siblings in another world. She deduces Sakura preserved her heart in Imaginary Numbers Space to survive Shinji Matou's assault.
Rin retains core traits: resourcefulness, perceptiveness, and emotional depth regarding Sakura. Her tsundere tendencies toward Shirou are more overtly clichéd, and her rivalry with Luvia—often fueled by mutual romantic feelings for Shirou—leads to destructive confrontations complicating missions. Financial constraints periodically force her to compromise pride for high-paying work. She exhibits self-awareness about her physical appearance, a trait noted by others like Ruby and Luvia.
As a magus, Rin excels in energy transformation, primarily storing mana in jewels for high-impact attacks equivalent to "A-rank" spells. Her signature offensive spell is Gandr, firing concentrated mana as a curse projectile. She possesses basic healing capabilities, though she considers this a weaker skill requiring significant stabilization time before treatment. She wields the Azoth Sword for rituals involving multiple jewels, incanting German activation sequences for complex spells like Thor's Hammer—a support spell creating a magic amplification circuit to enhance allies' attacks. She employs unconventional methods like the Shared-Pain curse, linking her sense of pain to Chloe von Einzbern to deter hostile actions against Illya. Hand-to-hand combat remains part of her skillset.
Key relationships define her dynamics. She initially views Illya as a card retrieval tool but develops genuine care and mentorship, evolving into protective loyalty. Her rivalry with Luvia blends deep animosity with unspoken mutual respect, often manifesting in financially ruinous clashes. Feelings for Shirou drive many decisions, complicated by his obliviousness. Confrontations with Sakura across dimensions underscore Rin's unresolved guilt and longing for their severed sibling bond.
