TV Special
Description
Nobita Nobi is a 10-year-old Japanese boy residing in Tokyo. He possesses average height, fair skin, straight black hair, black eyes, and wears distinctive large round glasses. His typical outfit is a yellow polo shirt with a white collar, navy blue shorts, white socks, and light blue shoes, though clothing colors and minor height details vary slightly across different media versions.

His personality is defined by significant flaws: perpetual laziness, consistent academic failure, and physical ineptitude. He habitually naps, avoids studying, and receives poor grades, leading to school detentions and parental disapproval. His athletic shortcomings frustrate peers during sports. Nobita relies heavily on the robotic cat Doraemon, constantly pleading for futuristic gadgets to solve minor problems, retaliate against bullies, or gain approval. This dependency often results in gadget misuse, triggering unintended complications.

Despite these shortcomings, Nobita possesses redeeming qualities. He demonstrates inherent kindness, showing compassion for stray animals and a willingness to help others. He displays notable creativity, finding innovative uses for Doraemon's tools, like repurposing a "power of wind" fan for flight or a voice hardener for transportation. He exhibits exceptional natural marksmanship, quickly mastering tools like the Air Cannon, and excels at string figures (cat's cradle). In critical situations, particularly in feature films, he reveals courage, risking his life to save others or entire communities. These traits imply his academic struggles stem more from laziness than lack of intellect.

Nobita's background involves a bleak future in the original timeline, where his failures lead to financial ruin and marriage to Jaiko (Gian's sister). This results in impoverished descendants, including his great-great-grandson Sewashi. To alter this future, Sewashi sends Doraemon from the 22nd century to support Nobita. Doraemon's intervention helps Nobita improve his life, ultimately leading to his marriage to his childhood friend and love interest, Shizuka Minamoto. Their future includes a son named Nobisuke. Nobita's affection for Shizuka is mutual, though he sometimes awkwardly invades her privacy, such as using gadgets like the Anywhere Door to enter her bathroom, leading to comedic confrontations.

His friendships are complex. Shizuka encourages his studies, though Nobita envies her closeness with the high-achieving classmate Hidetoshi Dekisugi. Takeshi "Gian" Goda regularly bullies Nobita but occasionally shows underlying loyalty, aiding him in perilous situations. Suneo Honekawa acts as a rival, flaunting wealth and excluding Nobita, yet their dynamic includes moments of camaraderie, especially when uniting against Gian.

In the "X'mas da yo! Doraemon & Doraemons Chō Special," Nobita experiences seasonal melancholy, prompting Doraemon to host a festive gathering with the Doraemons—parallel-world counterparts. The special highlights Nobita's emotional vulnerability and his role in collaborative problem-solving. When a mysterious Santa Claus appears, Nobita participates in the group's investigation, leading to misadventures involving time travel and identity verification, reinforcing themes of friendship and generosity consistent with his portrayal.

Nobita's character development is often cyclical within the episodic series, resetting growth to maintain structure. However, long-form narratives like films and the "Stand by Me" series depict sustained maturation, showcasing increased responsibility and self-sacrifice. His cultural impact includes recognition as a relatable everyman, though he faces criticism in regions like India and Pakistan for perceived negative influences on children due to laziness and rebelliousness. A dinosaur fossil, "Eubrontes nobitai," was named in his honor, reflecting the character's global recognition.
