Description
Kogarashi Fuyuzora is the protagonist of Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs. He is a young man who has been haunted by misfortune for most of his life, to the point of being homeless and living on the streets prior to the events of the story. His background is that of a wandering psychic medium, having been raised by a grandmother who trained him in spiritual and martial techniques. Despite his grim past, he is sincere, honest, and possesses a strong sense of justice, often prioritizing the well-being of others over his own safety.
Kogarashi’s primary motivation is to find stable housing and a place where he belongs. After being introduced to the Yuragi Inn, a hot springs inn that is also haunted by the ghost of a young girl named Yuuna, he discovers that his supernatural abilities allow him to interact with and exorcise evil spirits. His goal shifts from simple survival to protecting the inn’s residents and guests, as he gradually comes to view the inn as his home. He is also driven by a desire to help Yuuna resolve her lingering attachments to the living world so she can move on, though his feelings for her complicate this mission.
In the story, Kogarashi serves as the central character and primary source of conflict resolution. He frequently battles rogue spirits, curses, and other supernatural threats that target the inn or its guests. His role is that of a protector, but also a bridge between the living and the dead, using his mediumship to mediate between the two realms. He often finds himself in comedic yet ecchi situations due to the inn’s female residents, which he endures with an awkward but respectful demeanor.
Key relationships define much of his arc. With Yuuna, the friendly ghost of the inn, he forms a close emotional bond that borders on romance, even as he tries to help her pass on. He develops a sibling-like camaraderie with the other residents, including the flirtatious and powerful kunoichi Sagiri, the wandering ayakashi Koyuzu, and the cursed oiran Nonko. Each relationship tests his patience and loyalty, but he never wavers in his commitment to protect them all equally. His dynamic with the landlord Oboro is one of mutual necessity, as he works off his rent through labor and exorcisms.
Development-wise, Kogarashi grows from a lonely, dispossessed outcast into a confident and trusted figure within the community of the inn. He learns to accept affection and companionship, moving away from his initial belief that he is cursed to be alone. His resolve strengthens as he faces increasingly dangerous foes, and he becomes more adept at balancing his spiritual duties with his emotional ties to the living and the dead. By the end of the series, he achieves a degree of stability and emotional fulfillment, though he remains humble and earnest.
Notable abilities include his high spiritual power, which allows him to see, touch, and exorcise spirits as if they were physical beings. He is skilled in a family martial art known as the Spirit Fist style, which channels his spiritual energy into devastating physical strikes. He can also perform purifications, break seals, sense supernatural presences from a distance, and temporarily lend his spiritual energy to others. His physical endurance is extraordinary, a product of his harsh upbringing, and he can withstand attacks that would incapacitate normal humans. Despite his power, he rarely kills spirits, preferring to exorcise them by destroying the source of their attachment or by granting their final wishes.
