Description
Koyuzu Shigaraki is a supporting character in the anime Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs. She is a young female bake-danuki, a shapeshifting tanuki yokai, who descends from a secluded mountain village to train among humans and become a fully accomplished shapeshifter. As a child of her kind, she is regarded with a different sense of maturity than a human of the same age. Her background traces to a bake-danuki settlement where she was born on April 6. By age five she began learning to live in human society through transformation, and at ten she was left on her own to prove herself. Her limited skill in shapeshifting, however, caused her to lose her footing in the human world, leaving her to wander until she encountered the residents of Yuragi Inn.

Her personality is straightforward, innocent, and frequently impulsive. She tends to act before thinking, but her lack of restraint is more childish than malicious. She is affectionate and sincere, traits that help her smoothly integrate with the people around her despite her occasional blunders. Her primary motivation is to refine her shapeshifting abilities and gain the experience needed to become a fully realized bake-danuki.

In the story, Koyuzu first appears when she stalks the inn resident Chisaki Miyazaki. After a confrontation with the protagonist Kogarashi Fuyuzora, she is welcomed into Yuragi Inn and becomes a permanent resident. Her role blends comic relief with moments of genuine growth; her impulsive nature frequently sparks chaotic, lighthearted situations, yet she also forges warm bonds with the other tenants. Key relationships include her friendship with Chisaki and her familiarity with the household’s central figures, Kogarashi and the ghost Yuuna, who treat her as part of their unconventional family. Over time, Koyuzu learns greater self-control and gradually improves her transformation skills, though she never entirely sheds her habit of acting before thinking. Her development is one of slow maturation, where the inn’s accepting environment allows her to make mistakes without losing her place.

Her notable ability is shape-shifting, a fundamental tanuki power. She can alter her appearance to mimic objects, animals, or other people, but her transformations are often imperfect, frequently leaving behind telltale tanuki traits like a tail or animal ears. This flaw becomes a recurring source of comedy and a plot device that emphasizes her ongoing training. Physically, she stands at 125 centimeters tall, with blonde hair, yellow eyes, and the distinctive ears and tail of a tanuki, often dressed in traditional Japanese clothing such as a kimono with an obi sash.
