Description
Kōichi Yamada, alias Perman No. 5 or Perbō, is a toddler aged one and a half to two years, serving as the youngest recruit in the Perman team. Residing in Kawasaki, Japan, with his salaryman father and homemaker mother, he joined the team after accidentally uncovering Mitsuo Suwa (Perman No. 1) without his mask, compelling Birdman to enlist him to protect Mitsuo’s anonymity. A psychological evaluation affirmed his suitability, leading Birdman to appoint him as Perman No. 5.

He sports a yellow helmet, pink cape, and a pink badge shaped like a “P.” Despite his infancy, he displays surprising intellect and strategic acumen, coupled with combat prowess that allows him to exploit adversaries’ dismissive views of his youth. His communication relies on infantile expressions like “baboo” and broken katakana phrases. Though initially a source of humor, he proves instrumental in missions by crafting inventive strategies and partnering with allies such as Perman No. 4 (Peryan) to overcome challenges.

His narrative presence is confined to the 1967 black-and-white anime and early manga installments. Later adaptations, including the 1983 color anime, excluded him to streamline stories and align with revised age demographics. Select reprints, such as the *Fujiko F. Fujio Complete Works* Volume 2, retained his appearances, though updated editions often edited or omitted his scenes.

Post-1960s media gradually erased his background and role, excluding him from spin-offs and films like *Pa-Pa-Pa the ★ Movie: Perman* (2003). His legacy endures within niche fan circles and archival releases, where his brief yet notable role remains a curious footnote in the franchise’s evolution.
