Movie
Description
Mitsuo Suwa, alias Perman No. 1, is an eleven-year-old Tokyo resident navigating typical school challenges—academic difficulties, maternal reprimands for poor grades and messiness, and sibling rivalry with his sister Ganko, who exposes his mischief. His fears encompass ghosts, injections, and cockroaches, while he avoids both studying and chores. Beneath these flaws lies a core of kindness, driving him to aid others despite personal sacrifice.

His existence shifts when the alien Birdman (originally Superman) recruits him as a superhero, granting three tools: a strength-boosting helmet, a flight cape limited to 119 km/h, and a badge enabling communication and underwater breathing. To safeguard his identity, Birdman supplies a copy-robot for substitutions during heroics; misusing this robot for personal errands sometimes backfires. Identity exposure initially risks brain cell destruction, later amended to animal transformation.

Leading the Perman team—Booby the chimpanzee (No. 2), secretly tomboyish child actress Sumire Hoshino (No. 3/Perko), Hōzen Ōyama (No. 4), and briefly Kōichi Yamada (No. 5)—Mitsuo evolves from a clumsy novice facing near-exposure mishaps into a resourceful hero. He coordinates team speed boosts for critical rescues. Personally, he harbors a crush on classmate Michiko Sawada but clashes with Perko, unaware she is his idol Sumire. Their antagonism gradually softens into mutual affection; he protects her from resigning and eventually returns her feelings.

Birdman selects Mitsuo for advanced training on Bird Planet as a potential successor. Before departure, he reconciles with Perko, who reveals her identity as Sumire and declares her love; he pledges to marry her upon return. His copy-robot permanently assumes his Earth life. Extended absence is implied in Doraemon crossovers, where adult Sumire awaits his return, affirming enduring bonds.

In *Pa-Pa-Pa the ★ Movie: Perman (2003)*, Mitsuo’s pre-hero life features friends Kabao and Sabu. An accidental balloon-assisted encounter with Birdman triggers forcible recruitment, leading directly to his first transformation and flight as Perman No. 1.
