Mitsuo Suwa is an ordinary elementary school boy, a fifth grader who is not particularly good at his studies, dislikes being scolded by his mother, and is afraid of ghosts and cockroaches. He has a crush on his classmate Michiko Sawada and is a devoted fan of the idol singer Sumire Hoshino. His everyday life is unremarkable and he is often clumsy, but beneath his ordinary exterior lies a strong sense of justice. When the alien superhero Birdman selects him to become a superhero, Mitsuo is given a special set of items: a mask that multiplies his physical strength and intellect, a cape that allows him to fly at speeds up to 119 kilometers per hour, and a badge that enables communication with other Permans and provides breathable air underwater. Equipped with these tools, he transforms into Perman No. 1. As Perman, Mitsuo possesses superhuman abilities, including a strength that is 6600 times that of a normal person, the power of flight, and enhanced durability. He uses a copy robot to take his place and maintain his secret identity, though the robot sometimes causes trouble by acting on its own. Mitsuo leads the Perman team alongside the other members: Booby (Perman 2), Sumire Hoshino (Perman 3), and Paeru (Perman 4). Although he is the appointed leader and tries his best to protect people and thwart criminals, he is still a somewhat bumbling and clumsy hero. His motivations stem from a genuine desire to help others and uphold justice, though he also enjoys the admiration and attention that come with being a superhero. Over the course of his adventures, Mitsuo grows more responsible and learns to balance his ordinary life with his heroic duties. In the film Pa-Pa-Pa the ★ Movie: Perman, Mitsuo’s role is central: when Dr. Octo, a cephalopod researcher, kidnaps Sumire Hoshino as part of a scheme for world domination, Mitsuo is deeply concerned for the idol he admires (unaware that she is actually his fellow Perman, Perman 3). He transforms into Perman No. 1 and resolves to rescue her, facing the giant octopus and the villain’s plans with determination. His relationships are key to his character: he looks up to Birdman as a mentor, he has a friendly rivalry with his teammates, and he maintains a secret crush on Michiko while unknowingly working alongside his idol. Mitsuo’s development is marked by his increasing competence and confidence as a hero, though he remains the same earnest and occasionally accident-prone boy at heart. His notable abilities, aside from his superhuman strength and flight, include the use of the badge for communication and underwater breathing, as well as the clever deployment of his copy robot to cover for his absences.
