Description
Mattsu is a young boy living in the city of Matsuyama, where he spends his days exploring the area’s legends and puzzles alongside his friend Yanma. He is ten years old and has a natural curiosity about the world around him, particularly drawn to mysterious and unexplained phenomena. His personality is characterized by a lively and mischievous streak, though he can also be somewhat scatterbrained. Despite these traits, he genuinely cares about his hometown and the people he meets, which fuels his enthusiasm for uncovering the secrets hidden in Matsuyama’s landmarks and history.

Mattsu’s primary motivation is a love for mystery-solving, which begins as a simple pastime of searching for the famous seven wonders of Matsuyama. When the trio stumbles upon a map that hints at the location of seven hidden treasures, his curiosity transforms into a determined drive to follow the clues, even as this draws the attention of menacing pursuers. As the story unfolds, his motivation deepens: he starts to consider not just the thrill of discovery, but also what kind of future he wants for the city he calls home.

In the narrative, Mattsu serves as one of the central protagonists. Together with Yanma and the older high school student Moburi, he forms the core group that propels the adventure forward. He is often the initiator of new investigations and the one who pushes the group to keep exploring, despite the dangers that arise. His relationship with Yanma is one of equals—they share a bond of friendship and a common interest in mysteries, frequently bantering and encouraging each other. Moburi acts as a guide and older sister figure, teaching the boys about Matsuyama’s history and the context behind the puzzles they solve. Mattsu respects her knowledge and relies on her help, but he also shows independence in his decisions.

Over the course of the anime, Mattsu undergoes development from a carefree child who sees mysteries only as games into a young person who recognizes the weight of choices that affect his community. The climax forces him to decide what kind of city Matsuyama should become, a moment that reflects his growing maturity and sense of responsibility. He does not possess any supernatural or extraordinary abilities; his strengths are his keen observation, persistence in solving riddles, and courage to face unknown situations. His deep familiarity with Matsuyama’s local lore also proves useful in navigating the quest.
