Description
Mikiya Kokutō comes from a typical family with parents and a younger sister, Azaka Kokutō. His uncle, Daisuke Akimi, works as a detective; their close, brother-like bond due to similar ages leads Daisuke to share case details for Mikiya's input. Mikiya attended high school in the late 1990s, first encountering the aloof and intimidating Shiki Ryougi on a snowy March night in 1995. His persistent efforts to understand her forged a gradual bond. Academically average, he nonetheless displayed exceptional diligence and observational skills.
Gentle, sincere, and innately compassionate, Mikiya attracts trust from people and animals. His fundamental drive, his "Origin," compels him toward a normal life and manifests as "one that will never hurt others." This results in a nonjudgmental outlook; he forms independent opinions and avoids preconceptions. He perceived kindness beneath Shiki's cold exterior and maintained faith in her humanity even after learning of her violent impulses. He rarely displays strong emotions, crying only in extreme circumstances, like accepting responsibility for Shiki's actions after a critical event.
His relationship with Shiki evolved from curiosity to deep commitment. He promised to attend college with her before her coma. After her accident, he abandoned his education to work under Touko Aozaki at her detective agency, Garan no Dou. Touko valued his investigative talents, particularly his ability to uncover hidden information, demonstrated when he located her magically concealed workplace. Mikiya supported Shiki through her post-coma identity struggles, including dissociation from her male personality, SHIKI, and adaptation to the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. They eventually married; Mikiya adopted her surname, becoming Mikiya Ryougi, and joined the Ryougi family's business operations.
Mikiya endured significant physical trials. In February 1999, Lio Shirazumi attacked him, causing the loss of functionality in his left eye and permanent damage to one leg. Recovery involved overcoming mental trauma from exposure to a hallucinogenic drug. Professionally, after Touko's departure, he transitioned into accounting for the Ryougi organization, though he considered himself unqualified. By 2007, he lived with Shiki and their daughter, Mana Ryougi, balancing family life with occasional supernatural investigations, such as assisting Lord El-Melloi II in locating a cursed individual.
During "Future Gospel," partly set in August 1998, Mikiya counseled Shizune Seo, a Reien Academy student with precognitive abilities. His calm advice helped her reframe her power as an extension of ordinary human prediction rather than a curse, alleviating her fatalism. A decade later, in 2010, his daughter Mana referenced him, noting his vulnerability to women's influence and his physical similarity to the one-eyed acquaintance Mitsuru Kamekura.
Mikiya's development spans his evolution from a high school student to a dedicated investigator, a survivor of physical and psychological trauma, a husband, and a father. His unwavering moral compass and commitment to Shiki remain constants as he navigates the Ryougi family's complex dynamics and the lingering threats of the supernatural world.
