TV-Series
Description
Yūri is the reigning champion of Megalonia and the primary rival of the protagonist, Joe. Initially presented as an antagonist, he is recognized as the greatest megalo boxer and holds the title "King of Kings." He is a towering figure, standing 6'5" with a broad-shouldered build, silver hair, and striking purple eyes. His appearance is often described as refined and wolf-like, contrasting with Joe's more rugged demeanor. Yūri typically wears sleek, maroon clothing, but beneath it is advanced, surgically-grafted gear with a silvery finish and purple accents.
His personality is initially cool, aloof, and self-centered, leading him to dismiss Joe's abilities. However, this demeanor is partially a facade to motivate opponents. Underneath, he possesses a deep respect for worthy adversaries and values authentic competition. He demonstrates loyalty to Yukiko Shirato, who supported him in the past, but ultimately prioritizes his personal desire for a genuine fight over her corporate ambitions.
Yūri's background involves a childhood in the slums, where he frequently engaged in fights. His natural talent was recognized by a coach who took him in and taught him boxing. The Shirato Corporation later recruited him due to his abilities. Although initially reluctant, Yūri accepted their offer.
His character development is driven by his encounters with Joe. After their first meeting, he becomes obsessed with fighting Joe at his fullest potential. This leads to the drastic decision to undergo a dangerous surgical procedure to remove his integrated gear, as he believes a gearless match is the only way to have a truly equal and meaningful fight. The surgery causes him significant physical suffering and loss of stamina, but he proceeds regardless.
In their final match at Megalonia, Yūri fights Joe without gear for 13 rounds. The battle is intense and evenly matched, but Yūri is ultimately defeated. The physical toll of the surgery and the fight results in him being left unable to walk. Despite his loss, he expresses gratitude for having found a rival like Joe.
Following the events of Megalonia, Yūri retires from active boxing and becomes a trainer. He mentors Edison Liu, who goes on to win the second Megalonia tournament and become the new champion. Yūri also provides assistance to Joe, honoring a request from Liu to support him. He aids Joe in his preparation for a fight against Mac by teaching him fundamental boxing techniques.
A later OVA reveals that Yūri visited his former coach after the final fight with Joe, providing further insight into his past and the origins of his boxing career.
