Char Aznable, born Casval Rem Deikun on November 17, U.C. 0059, was the son of Republic of Zeon founder Zeon Zum Deikun and elder brother of Sayla Mass (Artesia Som Deikun). After his father's death, believed by Casval to be a Zabi family assassination, he fled to Earth with his sister under Jimba Ral's protection. Adopted by southern European aristocrat Don Teabolo Mass, he became "Édouard Mass".
As a youth in the Texas Colony, Casval met Roger Aznable's son, Char Aznable, who shared his striking appearance except for eye color. When an assassination attempt by Kycilia Zabi killed the real Char, Casval adopted his identity. He infiltrated the Zeon Military Academy in U.C. 0074, graduating second in his class and befriending Garma Zabi. Concealing his face behind a mask under the pretext of burns, Char joined the Zeon Defense Forces.
During the One Year War (U.C. 0079), Char commanded the 4th Platoon, 6th Mobile Battalion. He earned the "Red Comet" moniker at the Battle of Loum, destroying five Federation Magellan-class battleships in his custom red Zaku II. Pursuing the Federation's White Base brought him into conflict with both his sister aboard the ship and his rival, Amuro Ray, piloting the RX-78-2 Gundam. Char orchestrated Garma Zabi's death as the first act of revenge against the Zabi family, declaring, "Garma, blame this on the misfortune of your birth".
Char rescued Lalah Sune from an Indian brothel, forming a complex Newtype relationship. Her death in battle with Amuro – intercepting a blow meant for Char – deepened his hatred for Amuro. Char later assassinated Kycilia Zabi at the Battle of A Baoa Qu, completing his revenge, and vanished.
By U.C. 0087, Char resurfaced as Quattro Bajeena, joining the AEUG to oppose the Titans. Piloting the gold Hyaku Shiki and mentoring Kamille Bidan, he was pivotal in dismantling the Titans. His Dakar speech condemning their atrocities shifted Earth Federation support to the AEUG. Disillusioned with Earthnoid-Spacenoid coexistence, he ultimately abandoned the group.
In U.C. 0093, Char led Neo Zeon in Char's Counterattack, aiming to force human evolution by dropping asteroid Axis on Earth to render it uninhabitable. He manipulated emotionally unstable Newtype Quess Paraya; her death escalated hostilities. During his final duel with Amuro, Char revealed secretly contributing psycho-frame technology to Amuro's Nu Gundam to ensure an even match. Both vanished in a psycho-field phenomenon while redirecting Axis away from Earth.
Char's personality blended charisma and cold calculation. He inspired fierce loyalty yet sacrificed allies for his goals. His leadership combined tactical brilliance with personal combat skill, though surpassed by Newtypes like Amuro and Lalah. Philosophically, he adhered to Zeon Deikun's Spacenoid independence ideals, evolving into an extremist who believed humanity's survival required escaping Earth's gravity. This conviction drove his descent from vengeful soldier to genocidal leader.
