Description
Lili, a 15-year-old orphan, lives with her paternal grandparents in France, helping run their family flower shop. Her mother, descended from plant spirits of the Flower Star, died during childbirth; her father vanished, leaving her upbringing solely to her grandparents. This history fuels her strong reactions to parental neglect or disrespect witnessed on her travels.
Her life changes dramatically on her 15th birthday when emissaries from the Flower Star—a talking dog named Nouveau and a cat named Cateau—approach her. They reveal her heritage and recruit her for a vital mission: to find the legendary Seven Color Flower, crucial for the Flower Star's succession. Lili accepts, embarking on a journey across Europe.
Her primary power comes from a magical pin bestowed by the Flower Star's king. By reflecting a flower in its mirror, she transforms her attire and gains specific skills needed for her situation, like mountain climbing or swordsmanship. This original pin shatters during a confrontation near a waterfall, causing a near-fatal fall. She later receives a replacement pin shaped like the royal crest, carrying a grave warning: its loss or destruction would end her life on Earth and prevent her return to the Flower Star. Its activation phrase is "Fu Flay Lu Fey Lora."
Throughout her quest, she faces antagonism from Togenishia, a selfish fairy, and her servant Yabouki (also identified as Boris), who seek the flower to seize power. Their conflicts involve repeated attempts to derail her mission, including kidnapping her companions and endangering locations she aids. Conversely, Lili receives consistent support from Serge, a mysterious photographer who provides flower seeds symbolizing lessons learned (the "language of flowers") to those she helps. These seeds are later sent to bloom in her grandparents' shop.
Lili develops romantic feelings for Serge, feelings that deepen through shared experiences like a waltz and his acts of kindness. Her journey concludes upon discovering the Seven Color Flower has grown in her grandparents' garden, nurtured by the seeds from those she aided. Serge reveals himself as the prince of the Flower Star and proposes marriage. Despite reciprocating his feelings, Lili declines the proposal, choosing to remain on Earth. In response, Serge abdicates the throne to his younger brother to stay with her.
Lili demonstrates adaptability and courage, occasionally using disguises or boyish attire to overcome obstacles, and shows particular protectiveness towards children and families. Her origin, mission, relationships, and ultimate choice between worlds remain consistent across the original 50-episode series and the theatrical short "Hello Cherry Country." A Chinese-Japanese sequel or remake is in production.
