Amparo Valencia
Description
Amparo Valencia is a prominent Spanish voice actress and dubbing director, best known for being the definitive Spanish voice of the character Jessie from the Pokémon franchise for over two decades. Based in Madrid, she has built an extensive career since the early 1980s, becoming a familiar voice in Spanish dubbing for animation and live-action series alike.
Valencia was introduced to the world of dubbing through her family. Her father, José Carlos Valencia, was a film producer who founded the dubbing studio Sincronía. Starting from the bottom as a telephone operator and production assistant, she was eventually called upon for small voice roles. Her first credited role was in the children's series El valle secreto in 1982. She learned the craft on the job, observing and working alongside seasoned professionals in her father's studio. In addition to her work as an actress, Valencia is also an accomplished dubbing director and adaptor, a role she finds particularly challenging and satisfying.
By far her most iconic and long-running role is that of Jessie, the female member of the villainous Team Rocket trio in the Pokémon anime series and films. She has voiced the character for years, becoming the habitual Spanish voice for Megumi Hayashibara, Jessie's original Japanese voice actress. Her work spans numerous Pokémon films and series, including titles such as Pokémon 4Ever, Pokémon Heroes - Latias & Latios, Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai, Pokémon the Movie: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction, Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us, Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, and Pokémon Journeys: The Series. Beyond voicing the character, Valencia has also directed the Spanish dubbing for nearly all of the Pokémon anime series and its films, with the exception of the first three movies.
Beyond her work in anime, Valencia's voice is widely recognized in Spain for numerous other roles. In live-action series, she has dubbed Catelyn Stark in Game of Thrones and Katherine Mayfair in Desperate Housewives. Her extensive filmography includes voicing characters in major animated features like Zootrópolis and Atlantis: The Return of Milo, as well as lending her voice to countless actresses in films and television series. She is also the habitual Spanish voice for actresses such as Paula Devicq, Emmanuelle Vaugier, and Dana Delany.
Throughout her career, Valencia has worked repeatedly with a core group of fellow voice actors based in Madrid. Data from dubbing databases indicates frequent collaborations with actors such as José Antonio Macias, Roberto Encinas, and David Robles, among many others. Her stature in the industry and connection with fans is evident by her appearances as a guest at events like the Salón Manga de Jerez, where she has appeared alongside her Pokémon co-stars, the voices of James and Meowth.
