Description
Kazanari Tsubasa is a Japanese woman born May 25, 2025, standing 167 cm tall with blue hair, indigo eyes, and blood type B. Her family comprises Kazanari Fudou (grandfather, biological father), Kazanari Yatsuhiro (deceased, listed as father but biologically her older half-brother), and Kazanari Genjuro (uncle, biologically her older half-brother).
Originally a shy, timid child with low self-esteem, she aspired to become a pop star while honoring her family's swordswoman heritage. Her personality hardened after her musical partner, Kanade Amou, sacrificed herself during a Noise attack at their Zwei Wing concert. This event led Tsubasa to adopt a cold, aloof demeanor, viewing herself solely as a weapon against Noise and rejecting emotional connections. She refused overseas singing contracts, believing her purpose was confined to singing on battlefields.
Her combat abilities derive from the relic Ame-no-Habakiri, enabling her to wield a Symphogear—anti-Noise armor powered by song. Trained from childhood in swordsmanship and ninja techniques by Ogawa Shinji, she specializes in speed and agility. Her Armed Gear manifests as a versatile katana capable of shifting forms, including daggers, massive blades, or leg-mounted fiery blades. Notable attacks include Blue Flash, One Thousand Tears, Heaven's Wrath, and Soaring Phoenix Slash. She also utilizes a government-issued motorcycle that transforms into a sword.
A turning point came when near-fatal injuries from using her Superb Song resulted in a spiritual encounter with Kanade, who encouraged her to "spread her wings." This prompted her to apologize for past behavior toward allies like Hibiki Tachibana and Genjuro, leading to a gradual emotional reopening. By Symphogear G, she evolved into a senior figure among Symphogear users, mirroring Kanade's former role. She remains protective, often reverting to coldness to deter others from life-threatening actions, exemplified when Hibiki's overuse of Gungnir endangered her life.
Despite her growth, Tsubasa retains traits like bluntness, literal thinking, and difficulty understanding humor. She is notably absent-minded, particularly regarding domestic chores—her living spaces are frequently messy—and everyday concepts like mosquito repellent use or rock-paper-scissors gestures. She remains oblivious to her celebrity status, expressing surprise at international variety show requests.
Key relationships include her foundational bond with Kanade, who helped her overcome shyness; her initial hostility toward Hibiki (whom she viewed as replacing Kanade) that softened into mentorship; and her close dynamic with Maria Cadenzavna Eve, marked by mutual care. Instances include Tsubasa promising to "hear Maria's story in bed," blushing when Maria grabbed her arm, carrying her in battle, hand-holding, and offering to buy her birthday clothes while stating Maria was "an important part of her life."
Her musical repertoire features solo songs like Zettō Ame no Habakiri, Gekkō no Tsurugi, and Beyond the BLADE, often incorporating enka and traditional Japanese elements with lyrical themes of swords and wind. Group performances include collaborations with Kanade (Gyakkō no Flügel), Maria (Fushichō no Flamme), Hibiki and Chris (RADIANT FORCE), and Shirabe Tsukuyomi (Fūgetsu no Shissō).
Trivia notes: Her name "Tsubasa" means "wings," while "Kazanari" combines "wind" and "to cry." She first activated her relic at age five, obtained a driver's license at 16, avoids eating past 9 PM for fitness, and shares her voice actress's preference for enka music.
