Description
Baku, a purple tapir from Mariland frequently confused for an eggplant, hails from a bustling household of twelve younger siblings. Born on February 29, he shouldered caregiving duties early, fostering a diligent work ethic and nurturing demeanor that later endeared him to kindergarteners. His speech carries a regional lilt, punctuating sentences with “~zona” in homage to his mother’s heritage. A rift with his father drove him to flee, leading to a fateful beach encounter with Kuromi. Though initially vexed, she offered solace, sparking an unshakable alliance. When Kuromi faced imprisonment for stealing bread to aid his struggling family, Baku willingly joined her in confinement. Their jailbreak and theft of the Melody Key catapulted them into the heart of ongoing conflicts.

As Kuromi’s steadfast aide, Baku employs his acute sense of smell to track Black Notes, consuming and storing them within himself. His flight capability makes him her primary transport. In *Kuru Kuru Shuffle*, he evolves into the “paragon of Doggone Losers,” harnessing negative energy to unleash attacks like the Doggone Loser Beam and adopt the vigilante identity “Eggplant Mask.” During *Sukkiri*, an accidental release of stored Black Notes spawns Huff-Huffs—remnants of the fallen Dar-chan—compelling Kuromi to gather Anger Gems for her schemes.

Despite enduring Kuromi’s harsh treatment, Baku’s loyalty never wavers, fueled by a yearning for belonging. Though harboring fleeting affections for figures like Chika-chan and Uta, his devotion remains fixed on Kuromi. His mischievous streak is tempered by conscience, evident in covert kindnesses: delivering newspapers to cover rent or aiding children.

A journal chronicling his adventures with Kuromi, once destroyed by Hiiragi but later restored, anchors his narrative. His journey unfolds across series like *Onegai My Melody High School* and *Kuromi’s Pretty Journey*, where he navigates their fraught bond while persistently supporting her ambitions. Through trials and transformation, Baku epitomizes resilience, unwavering loyalty, and the quest for self-worth against adversity.
