Description
Kouji Ibuki debuted as an elementary school classmate of Toshiki Kai and Taishi Miwa. Quiet and gentle by nature, he enjoyed Vanguard but deliberately held back during matches, hoping letting others win would increase their enjoyment. This strategy backfired, causing anger and rejection from peers, contributing to his loner status.
Years later, corrupted memories transformed Kouji into the main antagonist of the Neon Messiah movie. Manipulated by Oksizz, he gained the power to delete Vanguard units and aimed to destroy Vanguard, Earth, and Cray. Defeated by Kai and Aichi, Harmonics Messiah restored his memories and normal state.
In Cardfight!! Vanguard G, Kouji worked at FIVA's United Sanctuary Branch and coached Team Demise, also sponsoring the Under20 championship. His appearance changed: taller, with longer hair, wearing a white coat trimmed in red and charcoal gray over a dark violet shirt. Personality-wise, he grew colder, more reserved, and blunt, though he displayed a friendlier side around Mamoru Anjou. Some characters, like Kamui, harbored grudges against him due to his actions during the Messiah Scramble.
Following the movie, Kouji traveled the world, potentially seeking redemption. During his travels, he encountered Rive Shindou, who entrusted him with the Gear Chronicle clan and three Depend Cards. Rive revealed his past with Ryuzu Myoujin and tasked Kouji with ensuring Chrono Shindou grew strong enough to stop Ryuzu. To fulfill this mission, Kouji became Kanzaki's underling and Team Demise's coach, infiltrating the Vanguard Association to draw out Ryuzu. He anonymously sent Chrono the Gear Chronicle cards and a map to Card Capital 2, sparking Chrono's cardfighting journey.
Throughout G, Kouji tested Chrono's abilities through cardfights, initially using Gear Chronicle before revealing his true clan, Link Joker. He adopted a "win-at-all-costs" approach in matches, criticized by Mamoru for fostering tournament cheating. In Stride Gate, Kouji executed "Plan G," leading an elite team including TRY3 to infiltrate Ryuzu's lab, secure the Depend Card and summoned units, stealing the card and arranging for Kamui to deliver it to Chrono.
Kouji confronted Chrono in a decisive cardfight to determine if Chrono could awaken the Depend Cards and confront Ryuzu. After Chrono's victory, Kouji revealed Ryuzu as the true enemy threatening Earth and Cray. He then rallied allies, including original series characters, to pursue Ryuzu and thwart his plans involving the Zodiac Time Beasts and Stride Gate.
Kouji was a highly skilled cardfighter. Beyond his temporary Deletor powers from the movie, he demonstrated physical prowess by incapacitating United Sanctuary employers and striking down Shouma. His cardfighting style emphasized strategic hand advantage and psychological pressure, leveraging Link Joker's locking and unlocking mechanics. His vanguard circle was white.
