Description
Lynette Bishop, who is often called Lynne, is a character from the anime Strike Witches: 501st Joint Fighter Wing Take Off! She is a fifteen-year-old witch born on June 11 and stands 156 centimeters tall. She is the only witch in the 501st Joint Fighter Wing who is a native of the Britannian Commonwealth. Lynette comes from a large, well-off family as the middle child of eight sisters, which shaped her into a practical and domestic person accustomed to caring for others. Her mother, Minnie Bishop, was a veteran witch who fought in the First Neuroi War, and Lynette herself attended an all-girls school before joining the military.
Lynette’s personality is shy, soft-spoken, and somewhat withdrawn. She often lacks confidence in her abilities and can be clumsy, leading her to be overlooked by others at times. Despite this, she is determined to do her best and genuinely cares for her comrades, often showing a nurturing, family-like attitude. She enjoys cooking, though she can be lazy about it and sometimes fails at her attempts. When alone, she can be seen groaning in frustration or self-doubt, yet she remains steadfast in her desire to protect her homeland.
Her primary motivation is to defend Britannia from the alien Neuroi threat. She joined the 501st Joint Fighter Wing shortly before Yoshika Miyafuji, who becomes her roommate and quickly her close friend. Lynette takes Yoshika under her wing, showing her around the base, and the two form a strong bond. Her key relationships within the squadron include mutual respect and camaraderie with other members, though her shyness initially hinders her from fully opening up. Over time, she grows more confident through her interactions and battles alongside her comrades.
Lynette holds the rank of Sergeant and is affiliated with the Royal Air Force 610th Fighter Squadron. Her role within the 501st is that of a sharpshooter. She uses a Mk. I Boys Anti-tank Rifle and a Bren light machine gun as her primary weapons. Her exceptional eyesight, almost magical in its precision, allows her to excel in long-range targeting, making her a valuable asset in combat. Her Striker Unit is based on the Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX, and her familiar is a Scottish Fold cat. Her magical abilities include this heightened vision and the capacity to fly with her Striker Unit, while her domestic skills reflect a practical use of magic in daily life.
Throughout the series, Lynette gradually overcomes her initial lack of confidence. An example of her growth is seen when she takes decisive action to break a curse affecting her squadron; she uses her anti-tank rifle to destroy a cursed idol, showcasing both her marksmanship and her willingness to act boldly to protect her friends. This development highlights her transformation from a hesitant, self-doubting young woman into a capable and brave fighter who contributes significantly to the 501st’s missions.
