Description
Charlotte Elwyn Yeager, known to her comrades as Shirley, is a witch from Liberion and a key member of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing. Hailing from a farming family in Myra, West Virginia, as the eldest of five children, Shirley first gained fame not as a soldier but as a record-breaking motorcycle racer. Before her enlistment in 1943, she shattered land speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats riding a magically enhanced Indian motorcycle, a feat that earned her the press moniker "Glamorous Shirley" and cemented her lifelong obsession with velocity.
Shirley is a tall, buxom young woman with a confident and sociable personality. She is defined by a powerful, thrill-seeking nature and an intense fascination with speed, which drives her personal goal to break the sound barrier. Despite this reckless pursuit of velocity, she has a contradictory obsession with cleanliness, famously having her personal bathtub transported to the 501st's base in Britannia. She possesses a magnanimous and straightforward character, is fiercely independent and freedom-loving, yet remains a reliable and integral part of the unit when it matters most. Her personality is a blend of carefree individualism and unwavering loyalty, making her the mood-maker of the squadron who gets along with nearly everyone.
Her primary motivation is the pure thrill of pushing limits, specifically to reach Mach 1 and become the fastest witch alive. Initially aspiring to be a singer, her dreams changed after witnessing witches in flight. This drive manifests in her constant tinkering and unauthorized modifications to her Striker Unit, a practice that nearly led to her expulsion from the Liberion Army's 363rd Fighter Squadron before her transfer to the 501st. In combat, she serves as the unit's high-speed interceptor, specializing in chasing down and destroying fast-moving Neuroi. Her role extends beyond combat, as she is also a gifted mechanic and engineer, skilled at restoring damaged aircraft like a Swordfish torpedo bomber and modifying ground vehicles.
Shirley forms a close, sisterly bond with Francesca Lucchini. She acts as a supportive elder sister to the younger witch, who is often seen cuddled up to Shirley, and they frequently embark on pranks and adventures together. She also maintains a notable rivalry with Gertrud Barkhorn, characterized by frequent clashes and mutual dislike that is nevertheless underpinned by a deep respect for each other's combat prowess. Throughout the series, Shirley demonstrates little in the way of emotional development or personal crisis, remaining consistently true to her confident, speed-focused nature. However, her reliability in critical moments proves that beneath her carefree exterior lies a capable and courageous soldier.
Her most notable ability is her inherent magic, known as Speed Boost or Super Acceleration, which allows her to exponentially increase her speed for short bursts. This power enabled her to achieve her dream of breaking the sound barrier, first accidentally during a Neuroi attack and later during a test flight of an experimental jet striker, solidifying her status as one of the fastest witches on record. Her magical familiar is the rabbit, which manifests as hare-like ears and a tail when she uses her powers. She pilots a customized P-51D Mustang Striker Unit she has nicknamed "Glamorous Shirley" or "Merlin," which she constantly modifies for greater speed. Her preferred armaments include the M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle and the Thompson submachine gun, which suit her high-speed, close-range diving attacks.
