ONA
Description
Haruka Amami, in the context of the anime series Puchim@s, is represented by a small, semi-sentient creature named Harukasan. This being is a "Puchidol," a chibi-like version of the human idol Haruka Amami from the larger The iDOLM@STER franchise. Harukasan was discovered by fellow idol Iori Minase in a shrine on a remote island during a rainstorm, where the local villagers revered Puchidols as divine beings. Upon being brought back to the 765 Production office, she was named by her human counterpart, Haruka Amami.
The personality and behavior of Harukasan are chaotic and heavily driven by a set of bizarre biological rules rather than complex emotions. She is largely non-verbal, communicating primarily through high-pitched squeaks and the cry "Kakka!" Her existence is defined by extreme reactions to environmental stimuli. Harukasan is affectionate in a simplistic way, often showing fondness by chewing on the hair of someone she is placed upon. However, her overall temperament is unpredictable and frequently destructive, which causes most of the other idols, particularly Yukiho Hagiwara, to fear her.
Harukasan's primary motivation is not expressed through ambition but through instinct. Her role in the story is to be a primary source of comedic chaos. The daily life at 765 Production is constantly disrupted by her transformations, which often lead to large-scale messes, property damage, and frantic search parties to round up her clones. Trips or holidays involving her have a tendency to escalate into what the staff considers catastrophic excursions.
Her key relationship is with her owner and human counterpart, Haruka Amami, who named her and is ultimately responsible for her. However, despite Haruka being her namesake, the Puchidol is most often under the care of another idol, Yayoi Takatsuki, who acts as her primary caretaker. Harukasan also has a notable connection to Iori, who was the one to originally find her. In terms of development, Harukasan herself does not undergo emotional growth. Instead, the narrative development revolves around the 765 Production staff learning to anticipate, manage, and survive her unpredictable nature, with limited success. From being an unknown entity discovered on an island, she becomes an established, if dreaded, member of the household.
The notable abilities of Harukasan are her defining feature and the engine of the show's humor. She possesses a set of powers reminiscent of the fictional creatures known as Gremlins. Her most famous ability is replication: coming into contact with water causes her to multiply exponentially into hundreds of clones. Conversely, exposure to bright sunlight is harmful to her. Another critical rule is that feeding her snacks after midnight transforms her into a vicious, dark-colored alter ego, which can only be reverted by removing and refastening her hair ribbons. In addition to these, Harukasan can grow to a gigantic size, often functioning as a mode of transportation when she becomes large enough to carry the other idols. On rare occasions, she has been observed to shrink to a minuscule size instead of growing. All of these transformations are unpredictable and frequently result in widespread mayhem.
