Description
Jirou Hitoyoshi was born in the 20th year of the Shinka Era and was adopted that same year by Professor Magotake Hitoyoshi, who raised him as a foster son. Though the circumstances of his birth were unknown and he was raised believing he was human, his true nature as a kaiju from another dimension—the source of his powers—was revealed in April of the 53rd year of the Shinka Era in Shinjuku.
He possesses golden eyes and short lilac hair that falls over his left eye. In early appearances, he wears a black suit with a black and blue striped scarf, red plaid cuffs, and white straps over his bandaged left arm. After leaving the Superhuman Bureau, his attire shifts to a black shirt adorned with a star and a red scarf reminiscent of sentai heroes.
His primary ability involves channeling and controlling large crimson flames from his left arm, which is fitted with three gear-like locks that regulate this power. Releasing each lock increases his strength but risks loss of control, with the third inducing a berserk state. These flames can burn anything they touch. Only Emi Kino can reseal the locks and restore his control. He also operates a transforming car called Equus, which shifts into a quadrupedal mech or an iron horse for high-speed travel and combat.
Initially the top superhero of the Superhuman Bureau, Jirou strongly believed in justice and used his power to protect superhumans and benefit society. However, between the 41st and 45th years of the Shinka Era, his principles underwent significant change. Disillusioned, he eventually left the Bureau after his beliefs about superheroes were shattered, becoming a vigilante on the run.
Further development arose when Daishi Akita and two other Fumer aliens performed a Heroic Sacrifice, sealing themselves within Jirou to act as a power regulator. This allowed him to use his abilities without going berserk. In the final events, losing all three limiters reverted him to his true form—a dragon-like energy being, or an anthropomorphic personification of a nuclear explosion. Though this form disappeared, others believe he remains alive and may return when people yearn for superhumans once more.
The name Jirou combines the characters for "you/thou" (爾) and "melodious/clear/bright" (朗), while Hitoyoshi means "person" (人) and "lucky/good" (吉). The term "hitoyoshi" can also translate to "good-hearted" or "naive."
