Description
Caroline functions as one of twin wardens aiding Igor within the Velvet Room, a prison designed for the protagonist's rehabilitation. She and her twin Justine are later discovered to be fragmented halves of a single entity, Lavenza, split apart by the false Igor (Yaldabaoth/the Holy Grail). Initially, neither Caroline nor Justine remembers their true origin or their creator's malevolence, believing their duty is to supervise the protagonist as a dangerous "inmate."
Caroline displays a consistently aggressive and impatient attitude, contrasting Justine's calm demeanor. She routinely addresses the protagonist as "inmate," employs physical intimidation like kicking him into the Velvet Room, and wields an electric shock baton. Her behavior fits the tsundere archetype, masking insecurities; Justine notes Caroline once practiced intimidating poses after being startled by Persona fusion but became too embarrassed to use them. Caroline often speaks condescendingly to Justine and resists questioning their purpose.
Her appearance features platinum blonde hair, yellow eyes, and a blue prison guard uniform. She wears a black eyepatch marked with a "V" and a hat bearing the letters "X-M-R-N." Combined with Justine’s hat ("O-Y-O-O"), their headgear spells "OXYMORON." She also wears a brassard on her left arm.
Within Velvet Room operations, Caroline executes Persona fusions via guillotine, handles fusion accidents with a chainsaw, converts Personas into items through electric chair execution, and manages solitary confinement for skill training. As part of the Strength Confidant, she and Justine assign fusion requests to the protagonist, rewarding completed tasks with abilities such as Group Guillotine (enabling 3-persona fusions) and Guillotine Booster (enabling 4+ persona fusions). During the final heist against the Holy Grail, Caroline appears outside the Velvet Room and restores the party's HP and SP when interacted with.
A pivotal moment occurs when Yaldabaoth, disguised as Igor, orders the twins to subdue the protagonist after an initial battle. They resist this command after a few turns, allowing Lavenza's consciousness (manifesting as a butterfly) to reveal their true origins and purpose. This leads Caroline and Justine to acknowledge their fragmented state and instruct the protagonist to fuse them back into Lavenza, restoring their unified form.
In spin-offs like *Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight* and *Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth*, Caroline retains her core personality while participating in dance competitions or providing navigational support. Her interactions with older Velvet Room siblings (Margaret, Elizabeth, Theodore) show deference, particularly a fear of angering Margaret. In *Persona 5 Royal*, special outing events allow the protagonist to invite Caroline and Justine to real-world locations like Big Bang Burger and Destiny Land. Completing these outings yields Skill Cards and subtly illustrates Caroline’s gradual openness.
After fusion into Lavenza, she can split into Caroline and Justine at will, notably during combat in *Royal* for All-Out Attacks. In a New Game+ scenario following the twins' optional boss defeat, Lavenza states Caroline developed affection for the protagonist due to his kindness during her incomplete existence.
