TV Special
Description
Goro Akechi, a high school detective celebrated as the "Second Coming of the Detective Prince," is known for his intelligence, charm, and frequent media appearances. His public persona presents him as well-mannered, charismatic, and committed to justice, voicing strong opposition to the Phantom Thieves while investigating mental shutdown cases alongside prosecutor Sae Niijima. This affable image masks a deeply conflicted and ruthless personality shaped by a traumatic past.
He is the illegitimate son of corrupt politician Masayoshi Shido, who abandoned Akechi and his mother. This neglect led to her descent into poverty and eventual suicide, leaving Akechi to grow up in institutions. Driven by resentment and a desire for acknowledgment, he approached Shido two years before the main events, offering his unique Metaverse abilities to eliminate the politician's rivals. Akechi caused mental shutdowns and psychotic breakdowns, including the deaths of Wakaba Isshiki and Kunikazu Okumura.
Akechi's Metaverse abilities include the power of the Wild Card, allowing him to wield multiple Personas. His initial Persona, Robin Hood, manifests as a heroic archer in white armor, reflecting his fabricated public image. His true Persona, Loki, embodies chaos and vengeance, with abilities like "Call of Chaos" to drive targets insane. In combat, he uses laser swords and ray guns, distinguishing him from the Phantom Thieves.
He infiltrates the Phantom Thieves under the codename "Crow" after blackmailing them with evidence of their identities. During the events adapted in *Dark Sun*, his betrayal is revealed: he attempts to assassinate Joker during Sae Niijima's Palace heist. The anime expands his rivalry with Joker through collaborative investigations and philosophical debates about justice. His inadvertent exposure of Metaverse knowledge—reacting to Morgana's voice during a "pancakes" comment—becomes a critical clue uncovering his deception.
After his assassination plot fails due to the Thieves' counterplan, Akechi confronts them in Shido's Palace. He admits his crimes and motives, declaring his hatred for Shido and resentment toward Joker for attaining the bonds he never could. A cognitive version of Akechi, created by Shido, later ambushes the group, leading to a battle where the real Akechi sacrifices himself to save the Thieves, sealing his fate behind a bulkhead.
In later appearances, such as the third semester storyline in *Persona 5 Royal*, Akechi reappears under ambiguous circumstances—possibly through Joker's subconscious wish—to oppose the antagonist Takuto Maruki's reality-altering goals. Here, he interacts with Joker without his fabricated persona, rejecting Maruki's false world despite the offer of a happier existence. His ultimate fate remains unresolved, with implications that his survival hinges on player choices during key interactions.
