Description
Junichiro Tanizaki is a character from the anime Bungo and Alchemist -Gears of Judgement-, based on the historical Japanese literary figure of the same name. In the story, he is summoned to the Imperial Library as one of the many reincarnated writers, known as Swordsmen, who battle the Taints, corrosive beings that contaminate literary works.
At first glance, Tanizaki appears as a handsome and polite young man, with gray chest-length hair and yellow eyes. However, this refined exterior masks a far more complex and unorthodox personality. He is famously known among his peers for his deep-seated masochistic tendencies and fetishes, which he makes little effort to conceal. He follows a personal motto of living as one is, without hiding inner desires, leading him to make shocking remarks about wanting to be stepped on by a beautiful woman's feet or, should he be reincarnated, to be reborn as a woman's shoe. This singular, often explicit, focus on his own desires firmly establishes him as a notable eccentric within the library.
Despite these strange proclivities, Tanizaki possesses a profound and unwavering seriousness when it comes to literature. He holds a great reverence for the written word and is deeply angered by the Taints' erosion of books. This duality defines his character: a man who can be simultaneously preoccupied with bizarre personal fantasies and deeply devoted to the noble cause of protecting literary heritage. He demonstrates moments of unexpected kindness and consideration, such as when he drapes a shawl over a sleeping Takeo Arishima to prevent him from catching a cold.
His primary motivation is the defense of literature and the restoration of tainted books, a duty he shares with all Swordsmen. His role within the library is that of a dedicated, if unusual, ally. He is not a lone wolf but forms strong bonds with other writers. His most significant relationship is with Nagai Kafū, whom he respects immensely and follows with an almost fanatical devotion; Tanizaki himself states that his hobby is following Nagai Kafū. This admiration is deeply rooted, as Tanizaki credits Kafū with setting him on the path of aestheticism.
Tanizaki also maintains a complex and interesting dynamic with Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. Reflecting the real-life literary disputes between the two historical figures, their relationship in the game contains elements of both rivalry and mutual respect. While they may not see eye to eye on literary theory, Tanizaki openly praises Akutagawa's talent, and they interact with a sense of honest friendship, such as when Tanizaki shows concern for him during events or when Akutagawa gifts him a book. Beyond these key figures, he interacts with a wide circle of writers, including Haruo Satō, with whom he shares a close friendship that is often one of embarrassment for Satō due to Tanizaki's relentless candor. His appreciation for detective fiction also leads to connections with writers like Edogawa Ranpo.
While specific narrative development is tied to ongoing game events, Tanizaki is portrayed as a character who is comfortable with his own bizarre nature. His personal conflicts rarely stem from changing who he is, but rather from reconciling his intense, serious love for literature with his frivolous outward behavior. He is knowledgeable about various arts, including theater, painting, and music, and is a known connoisseur of fine food and cats. In battle, he is considered reliable, with a stable mental state that makes him less susceptible to erosion. As a Swordsman, he wields a weapon, and his abilities are tied to his literary masterpieces, which include Tattoo, Crazy Love, and Light Snow. These abilities allow him to fight effectively against the Taints, using his literary power to purify corrupted books alongside his fellow authors in the library.
