Description
Bertholdt Hoover is a fictional character from the anime film Attack on Titan: The Roar of Awakening. He is a tall, slender teenage boy with short black hair, pale green eyes, an elongated face, and a noticeable habit of sweating when nervous. Standing approximately 192 centimeters tall, he is the tallest member of the 104th Cadet Corps. His most significant and defining characteristic is his ability to transform into the Colossal Titan, a 60-meter-tall humanoid creature that lacks skin, exposing its muscles and connective tissue, and constantly emits powerful jets of searing hot steam. In this form, he is one of the most destructive forces in the world, capable of obliterating city gates and entire districts with a single attack.

Originally an Eldian born in the Liberio internment zone in the nation of Marley, Bertholdt was selected as a Warrior candidate for the Marleyan military, inheriting the power of the Colossal Titan at a young age. He was sent on a mission to Paradis Island alongside his childhood friends Reiner Braun, Annie Leonhart, and Marcel Galliard, with the objective of reclaiming the Founding Titan for Marley and exterminating the perceived threat of humanity within the Walls. After Marcel was devoured by a Pure Titan, Bertholdt and Reiner proceeded with their mission, leading to the fall of Wall Maria in the year 845, an event that caused immense suffering and death, including that of the protagonist Eren Yeager's mother.

Bertholdt is characterized by a quiet, reserved, and self-professed weak-willed personality, often described by others as taciturn and lacking in initiative. His commandant noted his great potential but lamented his utter lack of drive. He typically remains in the background, following the lead of his more assertive comrade, Reiner, which creates an initial impression that he is less emotionally compromised by their mission than the others. However, this withdrawn nature masks a deeply conflicted and guilt-ridden individual. He is haunted by the atrocities he has committed, including the death of a villager who helped them and the abandonment of their comrade Marco Bodt, and he refers to his former comrades in the 104th Corps as precious friends. His loyalty to Reiner and Annie is fierce, and he harbors unspoken romantic feelings for Annie, which other characters, including Reiner and Armin, have observed.

Throughout the story, Bertholdt's motivations evolve from a desperate desire to complete his mission and return to his homeland to a more rationalized acceptance of his role as a villain. His father was ill, and he became a Warrior hoping his service would secure better medical care for him. During the Battle of Shiganshina, Bertholdt undergoes a significant transformation, adopting a detached, cold, and composed demeanor that allows him to efficiently carry out his duty. He rejects any attempts at negotiation or emotional manipulation, calmly declaring his intent to kill all humans inside the Walls, not out of malice, but because he has decided it is a necessary and inevitable part of the cruel world they inhabit. Despite this hardened resolve, his deep-seated fear of dying to Pure Titans resurfaces in his final moments; after being defeated, he reverts to a terrified boy, begging for his life and calling out for Reiner and Annie before being devoured by Armin Arlert in his Pure Titan form, thus passing the power of the Colossal Titan to Armin.
