Description
Katsumi Morikawa is a recurring character in the Cardfight!! Vanguard anime and manga, initially appearing as a fellow student of the protagonist, Aichi Sendou. His name carries an ironic meaning, as "katsu" can translate to "victory," a concept that frequently eludes him. Morikawa is a student at Hitsue Junior High School before later enrolling at Hitsue High School, where he remains a presence in the local cardfighting community.
In terms of personality, Morikawa is boastful and immensely proud of his perceived strength as a cardfighter, often self-proclaiming himself as the strongest despite a long history of defeats. This consistent losing streak has earned him derisive nicknames such as "Lose-umi" or simply "loser". He has a hard time accepting responsibility for his losses, typically blaming them on bad luck rather than his own questionable deck-building choices. Morikawa is also deeply superstitious and regularly consults an astrology book, which he refers to as his "bible," for guidance. A significant and comedic aspect of his character is his fanatical obsession with Kourin, a member of the idol group Team Ultra-Rare. He frequently "fanboys" over her, attending tournaments and events primarily for a chance to see her, though his affections are never reciprocated.
Morikawa's primary motivation in the story is not simply to win, but to prove his strength and follow his own peculiar philosophies about the game. His most defining trait is his overwhelming obsession with Grade 3 cards. He believes that power comes from these high-level units, and as a result, his decks are notoriously unbalanced, consisting of far too many Grade 3 cards and very few from lower grades. This flawed strategy consistently leads to "ride accidents," where he is unable to properly build his field from lower to higher grades, rendering his powerful cards useless. His favorite card is Juggernaut Maximum, and while he admires strength, his method of pursuing it is his own worst enemy.
Morikawa's role in the story begins as a minor antagonist. He steals Aichi's precious Blaster Blade card and wagers it in a fight against the skilled fighter Toshiki Kai. After his defeat, Morikawa eventually softens and becomes a friend and regular part of Aichi's social circle at the Card Capital card shop. He serves as a source of comic relief and a contrasting example of how not to build a deck, often losing to other characters to highlight their abilities. Despite his flaws, he is a loyal friend who supports his team, often cheering them on during major tournaments.
His key relationships include his friendship with Yuta Izaki, who is often seen accompanying him and acting as a foil to his antics. He shares a rivalry of sorts with the younger Kamui Katsuragi, who frequently mocks him and calls him "Makemi". Initially a bully to Aichi, Morikawa develops a genuine friendship with him over their shared love of Vanguard. His most notable one-sided relationship is with his idol, Kourin, whom he adores from afar.
Over the course of the series, Morikawa shows a degree of development, though his core habits remain. He never fully abandons his love for Grade 3 cards, but later arcs show him adopting a single clan, Spike Brothers, while still maintaining a grade-heavy build. A recurring theme of his character is the hidden potential beneath his poor deck construction. On multiple occasions when forced to use a pre-constructed or borrowed deck, such as a trial deck from the shop manager or Toshiki Kai's own Kagero deck, Morikawa demonstrates that he is genuinely a talented and dangerous fighter who can push even top-tier opponents like Aichi to their limits. These moments reveal that his primary weakness is not a lack of skill, but his own stubborn devotion to a flawed deck-building philosophy.
Regarding his notable abilities, Morikawa's primary "ability" is his paradoxical nature. While his own decks are notoriously weak and prone to failure, he possesses a high level of innate talent as a player when given a functional deck. He also seems to have a strange kind of luck when using other people's decks, being able to use them effectively with little practice. In later arcs, his Grade 3-heavy Spike Brothers deck, while still flawed, allows him to effectively use the Legion and Stride mechanics, and he even manages to put the protagonist Chrono Shindou in a difficult position during a fight.
