TV Special
Description
Flat Escardos is a student in the El-Melloi Classroom at the Clock Tower, the headquarters of the Mage's Association, where he studies under the tutelage of Lord El-Melloi II. He hails from the Escardos family, a magus lineage with a history spanning over 1800 years based in the Principality of Monaco. Despite his noble and ancient bloodline, Flat was viewed as an anomaly from birth due to his extraordinary nature.
Regarding his background, Flat was born with an unparalleled number of Magic Circuits and completed research that his clan deemed impossible by the age of eight. However, his family feared his abilities, as he completely lacked the traditional mindset considered crucial for a magus. His parents suspected he was not their child but an entity that had wandered in from another world, and they plotted to kill him on five separate occasions. Each time, he was saved by a mysterious presence that he alone could perceive. After surviving these attempts, he left home at less than ten years old to study at the Clock Tower, following the suggestion of a woman he met at a gambling banquet in Monaco.
When Flat first entered the Clock Tower, his exceptional talent generated high expectations, but he was soon ostracized. His inability to adopt a proper magus's mindset, combined with his overwhelming genius which wounded the pride of his instructors, led to him being passed around between departments. He was eventually recommended to the Modern Magecraft Theories department and accepted into the El-Melloi Classroom, where he finally found a sense of belonging under Lord El-Melloi II.
Flat possesses a strikingly paradoxical personality, which has earned him the epithets of genius idiot and cursed child of heaven's blessing. He is approachable and innocent, yet his behavior is wildly eccentric and he frequently causes trouble for those around him. He holds no obsession with magecraft, a trait considered essential for a magus, but can absorb magical knowledge with perfect efficiency and submit flawless reports. He often meddles in others' affairs with a lighthearted attitude and has a habit of giving nicknames to people he favors, including his professor, whom he calls names like Big Ben London Star. He possesses a gentle disposition contrary to that of a typical magus, which makes him ill-suited for the ruthless competition of the Clock Tower. His genuine and carefree nature makes it difficult for others to truly dislike him, despite the chaos he creates.
Flats primary motivation stems from his relationship with his teacher, Lord El-Melloi II, who was the first person to genuinely see him for who he truly was. Before meeting El-Melloi II, Flat had resorted to using magecraft to force a smile on his face just to appear normal, but his teacher immediately saw through this act. This recognition gave Flat a home and a purpose, making him deeply loyal to his professor. His desire to remain in this environment and assist his teacher is a driving force, even though his chaotic methods often result in stress for El-Melloi II.
Within the narrative, Flat serves as a supporting character and a powerful asset to Lord El-Melloi II. He and his classmate Svin Glascheit are known as the Twin Pillars of the El-Melloi Classroom, forming a formidable duo where Flat provides intellectual brilliance while Svin handles physical enforcement. Flat often acts as a chaotic deus ex machina, using his genius to resolve magical crises in ways that baffle even the most skilled magi. For instance, on one occasion, he fought against the Grand Magus Aozaki Touko outside the Twin Towers, and his trickery and skills were enough to astonish her.
His relationship with Svin Glascheit is a notable rivalry. Although they appear to have a poor relationship and Svin frequently yells at Flat for causing trouble for their teacher, they cooperate perfectly when necessary, demonstrating abilities far beyond their usual levels. Flat also shares a classroom with other key figures, including Gray, the personal disciple of Lord El-Melloi II, Caules Forvedge, and later, Rin Tohsaka and Luviagelita Edelfelt.
Developmentally, Flat remains unable to graduate from the El-Melloi Classroom for a long period. This is partly due to his terrible combat skills and lack of a magus's mindset, as he consistently fails his self-defense classes. While his magical talent allows him to surpass all his peers, his problematic personality and inability to conform to the standards of a typical magus leave him stuck in the classroom while others move on.
Flats notable abilities are described as abnormal. He possesses the rare Void attribute and Magic Circuits of such high quality and quantity that they are rated as EX, meaning they cannot be measured on a standard scale. He is an expert at analyzing magecraft formulas and specializes in Chaos Magecraft, which allows him to interfere with and reverse the spells of others. However, he has a critical weakness: he constructs his magecraft formulas anew based on the situation and cannot use the exact same magecraft twice. He also lacks any real combat instinct, and his ability to fight in close quarters is virtually non-existent. His eyes are normal, but he has the unique ability to see something that others cannot, an invisible presence that has saved his life on multiple occasions.
