ONA
Description
Maya Yamato is the drummer of the idol band Pastel*Palettes. She is a first-year university student at Keiho Women's University, where she studies sociology. Before joining the band, she worked as a studio musician, providing drum tracks for various productions. Originally brought in as a temporary member, she was later invited to stay permanently after her skill and presence impressed the other members.
Maya is deeply enthusiastic about musical equipment, a passion that defines much of her personality. When surrounded by instruments, amplifiers, or sound gear, she becomes animated and talkative, often launching into detailed explanations about technical specifications and setups. She sometimes writes magazine articles about music equipment and enjoys tinkering with sound systems in her spare time. Her excitement frequently manifests in a distinctive, awkward laugh described as huhehe, which slips out when she is particularly thrilled or nervous.
Socially, Maya is somewhat awkward and introverted. She appears tomboyish and does not pay much attention to her appearance, preferring to focus on her gear and drumming. Prior to becoming a drummer, she was more withdrawn and had difficulty connecting with others. Her journey into idol performance helped her gradually build confidence and become more comfortable in group settings. She wears glasses off-stage but removes them during performances, a habit that contributed to her initial appeal as a unique-looking idol.
Within Pastel*Palettes, Maya has developed close bonds with her bandmates. She admires Eve Wakamiya for her elegance and good looks, and she is good friends with Aya Maruyama, respecting Aya's dedication to growing as an idol. Hina Hikawa often unintentionally teases Maya due to her awkward nature, while Chisato Shirasagi sometimes gently scolds Maya for her distinctive laugh. Despite these dynamics, Maya values the group and enjoys being an idol, especially after realizing that she can remain true to herself while performing.
Maya's primary motivation is to improve as a drummer and to find fulfillment through her music. She draws inspiration from the newer idols at her agency and from a drummer she deeply respects, which pushes her to continue growing both technically and as a performer. Her role in Pastel*Palettes is that of the solid rhythmic foundation; her technical knowledge and reliable drumming ensure the band's performances remain steady and polished. In the comedic, short-form setting of BanG Dream! Girls Band Party! Pico, her equipment obsession and social quirks are often played for humor, highlighting her endearing lack of self-awareness and her earnest enthusiasm. Throughout the series, Maya develops from a hesitant studio musician into a confident idol who embraces her unique combination of technical skill and geeky passion.
