Description
Sayo Hikawa is the older twin sister of Hina Hikawa. She first attended Hanasakigawa Girls' High School, serving on the student council and disciplinary committee, later graduating and enrolling at Keiho Women's University as a first-year Humanities or Law student. She plays guitar in the band Roselia, recognized for her technical skill and unwavering commitment to their sound.
Her childhood was shadowed by a deep inferiority complex toward Hina, who surpassed her effortlessly in everything from games to academics, making Sayo feel perpetually inadequate. She took up guitar specifically because Hina did not pursue it, seeking a space independent of her sister. A lasting aversion to carrots traces back to childhood; Sayo habitually ate Hina's carrots to assist her, leading to scoldings for neglecting her own, though she later forgot this origin. Initially close, their growing disparity drove Sayo to emotionally withdraw from Hina, eventually shutting her out entirely.
Sayo presents a formal, serious, and often cold demeanor, even toward acquaintances. She embodies perfectionism, rejecting shortcuts or subpar work, and practices with relentless diligence. She stubbornly denies personal preferences like fluffy animals or junk food such as french fries, gum, and candy. Her speech is formal, typically using last names with honorifics, except with her sister and Tomoe Udagawa. Though prone to snide remarks similar to Yukina Minato, these often conceal her true feelings. She practices archery and possesses notably beautiful hands.
Significant growth emerges through her reconciliation efforts with Hina. Sayo gradually softens, showing open kindness and engaging beyond rigorous practice—participating in gaming or social events. She assists others more readily, exemplified by teaching guitar to Touko Kirigaya despite initial self-doubt. Her feelings toward Hina shift dramatically: early bitterness about having "nothing to say" evolves toward near-admissions that Hina is someone she treasures.
In Roselia, Sayo strives to refine her musical identity ("searching for her own sound") and dreams of sharing the stage with Hina as equals. This dedication occasionally turns destructive, like over-practicing until she collapsed with a 39°C fever after a band loss. That experience inspired her to compose "Avant-garde HISTORY" (originally titled "39", interpreted as "thank you"), reflecting her gratitude for Roselia's supporters and Yukina's view of growth through hardship. Post-graduation, she pursued a driver's license while maintaining Roselia commitments at university.
Beyond Hina, Sayo shares band dynamics with Roselia, highlighted in fan-driven pairings like SayoLisa (with Lisa Imai) and SayoRin (with Rinko Shirokane). She interacts with other bands, such as teaching Touko Kirigaya. Outside music, she explored baking under Lisa's guidance and became a regular player of Neo Fantasy Online, adopting the Tank class.
Physically, Sayo has slanted green eyes and long, light teal hair reaching her navel, styled with forelocks tucked behind her ears ending in curls and a single loose lock framing her face. At 161 cm tall, she ties as Roselia's tallest member alongside Maya. Her casual wear blends pale and dark shades in a tomboyish yet cute aesthetic.
