Description
Sayo Hikawa, one of the franchise's twin sisters, performs as Roselia's guitarist. Her childhood experiences instilled a deep inferiority complex toward her younger twin Hina, who consistently surpassed her in activities from playground games to academics. This led Sayo to choose guitar precisely because it remained untouched by Hina, marking her first deliberate step toward an identity independent of her sister. Resentment over her perceived inadequacy caused Sayo to emotionally withdraw from Hina for years.
Sayo exhibits a serious, formal, and perfectionist demeanor, prioritizing diligence and rigorous practice while rejecting mediocrity. She maintains a coldly stern exterior, denies personal inclinations like enjoying fluffy animals or french fries, and addresses others formally by surname. Her stubbornness manifests in blunt criticisms or actions she deems for others' benefit, often masking underlying concern. A childhood habit of eating Hina's carrots to shield her from scoldings unconsciously cemented Sayo's lasting aversion to them.
Her character evolves through reconciliation efforts with Hina, softening her rigidity. Sayo grows kinder and more open, supporting previously discouraged leisure activities such as gaming or social outings. She mentors others, teaching guitar to Touko despite initial self-doubt, and explores hobbies like baking with Lisa's guidance and tank-class gameplay in Neo Fantasy Online. After high school, she enters Keiho Women's University's Faculty of Law and pursues a driver's license.
Physically, Sayo has light teal hair reaching her navel, typically with forelocks tucked behind her ears and one loose strand framing her face. Her slanted green eyes complement a height of 161 cm, making her Roselia's tallest member alongside Maya. She blends tomboyish and cute aesthetics through pale and dark clothing.
In Roselia, Sayo's ESP M-II guitar reflects her dedication, while her perfectionism reinforces the band's disciplined ethos. During *FILM LIVE 2nd Stage*, Roselia performs "Avant-garde HISTORY" and "Determination Symphony" before joining Afterglow for the encore "Kyouen Red x Violet."
Trivia notes include the kanji contrast in her name—"Yo" (夜) meaning "night" versus Hina's "day"-associated characters. She prefers dogs over cats, habitually carries music magazines, and possesses notably skilled hands. Crossover events feature her in designs inspired by Ram (*Re:Zero*) and Makima (*Chainsaw Man*).
