TV-Series
Description
Kanon Matsubara is a fictional character from the BanG Dream! franchise, known for being the drummer of the band Hello, Happy World!. She is a high school student who later enters university, with her birthday falling on May 11th, making her a Taurus. She stands at 156 centimeters tall and has a blood type of O. Kanon is recognizable by her long, pale blue hair that she often wears loose, with a section tied into a side ponytail using a teal ribbon, and her large violet eyes.
In terms of personality, Kanon is characterized by her shy and timid nature. She is an introvert who often feels anxious and overwhelmed, frequently leading her to exclaim her catchphrase, "fuee". Her lack of confidence means she is very clumsy and has a poor sense of direction, often getting lost in unfamiliar places. While she is prone to panic and bursting into tears, this constant state of nervousness has, ironically, made her surprisingly composed and reliable in genuinely critical situations, a trait noticed by her bandmate, the ever-optimistic Kokoro Tsurumaki.
Kanon’s motivations are rooted in her personal growth. Initially, she had lost interest in playing the drums and was on her way to sell her instrument when she was discovered by Kokoro, who energetically recruited her for a new band. Despite her reservations and tendency to go along with things she cannot refuse, joining Hello, Happy World! becomes a pivotal point in her life. Her role in the story is to provide a grounded, sensible presence within her eccentric band, often working alongside her friend Misaki Okusawa to manage the group's wilder ideas. She acts as a stabilizing force, helping to keep the band functional while slowly becoming more confident and daring through her musical activities.
Regarding key relationships, Kanon shares a deep friendship with Chisato Shirasagi, having known her since middle school; the two frequently spend time together and even become roommates when they enter university. She also works a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant with Aya Maruyama. Within Hello, Happy World!, she has a special bond with Misaki, being the only band member who knows that Misaki is the person inside the costume of the band's mascot, Michelle. Her sense of direction is so poor that other members like Hagumi Kitazawa and Kaoru Seta often have to find her when she gets lost.
Throughout her development, Kanon transitions from being a nervous girl on the verge of quitting music to a dedicated and responsible musician. She starts as a second-year student at Hanasakigawa Girls' High School and eventually progresses to the literature department at Keihou Women's University. Her journey is one of gradual self-discovery and increased self-reliance, showing that even someone who is easily flustered can possess a strong will and a sense of responsibility. As a drummer, her skills are solid enough to have been instantly recognized by Kokoro during their first, impromptu performance. Outside of music, her notable abilities include an almost obsessive passion for jellyfish and a love for visiting cafes to enjoy sweets, coffee, and black tea, though she has a strong dislike for mushrooms.
