Description
Kasumi Toyama is a third-year student at Hanasakigawa Girls' High School and the founder, vocalist, and rhythm guitarist for the band Poppin'Party. She plays a distinctive red ESP Random Star guitar, discovered at the pawnshop owned by her bandmate Arisa Ichigaya's family. Her musical journey began in childhood upon hearing a mysterious "Star Beat" while stargazing, driving her ongoing quest to recapture that sound through Poppin'Party's music, which embodies that sparkling sensation for her.
She resides with her parents and younger sister Asuka, affectionately nicknamed "Aa-chan," sharing a playful dynamic where Kasumi occasionally seems the less responsible sibling. An alternate storyline iteration depicts her with two older sisters instead. Kasumi possesses a naturally cheerful and high-spirited personality, effortlessly forming friendships across diverse bands and groups. While fundamentally optimistic, she exhibits moments of forgetfulness and melodramatic flair. She shares a particularly enthusiastic rapport with Kokoro Tsurumaki of Hello, Happy World! and Tomoe Udagawa of Afterglow.
Visually, Kasumi features brown hair styled with segments pulled up and secured by red star-shaped clips, often mistaken for cat ears but intentionally star-themed. She stands 156 cm tall with purple eyes. Her outfits evolve across media portrayals: early casual wear includes a baby blue T-shirt dress layered with a yellow flannel shirt. Later designs incorporate an orange hoodie featuring star motifs, reinforcing her celestial theme. Seasonal variants include winter sweaters adorned with stars and summer outfits with polka-dot patterns.
Character development showcases her resilience. Initial challenges included vocal inexperience and unfamiliarity with guitar. During Poppin'Party's first live audition, overwhelming stress caused her to lose her voice, ultimately overcome through band support and renewed personal determination. As leader, she organizes events like the Girls Band Party recruitment drive and later secures a part-time position at the live house RiNG alongside Saaya Yamabuki and Shiina Taki. In *FILM LIVE 2nd Stage*, she performs with Poppin'Party on songs including "STAR BEAT! ~Hoshi no Kodou~" and participates in the ensemble encore "Kizunairo no Ensemble" alongside members of Pastel✽Palettes and Morfonica.
Notable trivia includes her aversion to natto and horror genres, fear of flying, and poor swimming ability compared to Asuka. She possesses a keen sense of smell, detecting new bread arrivals at Saaya's family bakery by scent. She also holds a Taiwanese/Chinese fandom nickname referencing her hairstyle's resemblance to sticky rice dumplings.
